Grab for Family Helps Filipino Teens Travel Independently While Keeping Parents Connected
MANILA, Philippines — For many Filipino families, allowing teenagers to travel independently can be both an exciting milestone and a source of concern. Whether heading to school, meeting friends, attending extracurricular activities, or running everyday errands, teens are becoming increasingly mobile.

Grab Boosts Ride Safety for Teens with Grab for Family
Grab Philippines is addressing this changing family lifestyle with Grab for Family, a feature designed to give teenagers aged 13 to 17 more independence while allowing parents and guardians to stay connected to their journeys.
The feature allows eligible teens to book rides independently through a Family Account while giving parents access to real-time trip updates, live ride tracking, communication tools, and additional safety features.
A New Way for Filipino Families to Move
The growing popularity of Grab Family Accounts reflects how shared mobility has become part of everyday life for many Filipino households.
According to Grab, Family Account sign-ups have more than doubled over the past year. Family members who join these accounts also take approximately 70% more rides in their first month, highlighting the growing demand for convenient, shared transportation options within households.
For busy families, ride-hailing can help simplify everyday routines. Parents may have work commitments, while teenagers have classes, school activities, social events, and other appointments. Grab for Family aims to make those journeys easier to manage without requiring parents to personally accompany their children every time.
The feature is designed to balance two important needs: giving teenagers greater freedom while helping parents remain informed about where they are.
“Safety and peace of mind have always been important to how we serve families on Grab. We’re continuing to build on that by making it easier for parents to stay informed about their teens’ journeys, while giving teenagers the support and confidence to move around more independently,” said Grab Philippines Head of Mobility CJ Lacsican.
Keeping Parents Connected Throughout the Ride
One of the main features of Grab for Family is real-time trip visibility.
Parents and guardians can receive updates at important stages of the journey. These notifications may include information about when a driver has been assigned, vehicle details, when the teen has been picked up, when the destination has been reached, and when the trip has officially ended.
A live map also allows parents to follow the ride in real time.
This can be particularly useful for families with teenagers who regularly commute to school, attend review classes, participate in sports activities, or travel around the city to meet friends and relatives.
Instead of repeatedly calling or messaging to check where their child is, parents can monitor the trip directly in the Grab app.
The feature also provides additional visibility when a journey does not go as planned. Parents may be alerted about unexpected stops or route deviations. The platform can also send in-app prompts to check on the passenger and help confirm their safety.

Built-In Safety Features From Pickup to Drop-Off
Grab for Family combines several safety and communication features designed to support teenagers throughout their journey.
Ride PIN for Added Verification
Before a ride begins, the Ride PIN feature adds another layer of verification.
The passenger and driver must match a unique in-app code before proceeding with the trip. This helps confirm that the teenager is entering the correct vehicle that was booked before the ride officially starts.
For parents, this additional verification step can provide greater reassurance during pickup.
3-Way Chat Keeps Everyone Connected
Families can also use the 3-Way Chat feature, which allows parents to join the in-app conversation between their teenager and the driver.
This shared communication channel can be useful when clarifying pickup locations, identifying landmarks, or providing additional instructions.
Instead of moving conversations across multiple messaging platforms, important trip-related communication can remain within the Grab app.
AudioProtect Adds Another Safety Layer
Grab for Family also includes AudioProtect, which enables encrypted audio recording on both the passenger’s and driver’s devices during a ride.
The recordings remain encrypted and cannot be accessed directly by either the passenger or the driver. They may only be reviewed by Grab’s safety team when a formal report is submitted.
The feature works alongside Grab’s existing Safety Center and Emergency Help functions, which provide users with access to localized assistance and emergency support when needed.
Family Safety Checklist Before Every Ride
Technology can provide additional safety tools, but families can also establish simple habits before a teenager takes a ride. A clear safety routine helps teens develop confidence while ensuring parents know what to expect throughout the journey.
Before booking or starting a ride, families can use this checklist:
Before the Ride
- Confirm the destination. Make sure the teenager enters the correct pickup and drop-off locations.
- Choose a safe pickup point. Wait in a well-lit and easily identifiable location whenever possible.
- Check the driver’s details. Compare the vehicle information shown in the app with the vehicle arriving at the pickup point.
- Verify the Ride PIN. Follow the in-app verification process before starting the trip.
- Keep the phone charged. Teens should have enough battery power to communicate and access the app throughout the journey.
- Enable trip notifications. Parents should make sure they can receive relevant ride updates.
- Discuss the route in advance. Teens should know the general direction and expected destination of their trip.
During the Ride
- Follow the journey through the app. Parents can use available live tracking and trip monitoring features.
- Stay reachable. Teenagers should keep their phones accessible in case communication is needed.
- Use the in-app chat when necessary. The 3-Way Chat feature can help clarify pickup points, destinations, or other trip details.
- Pay attention to unexpected changes. Teens and parents should be aware of unusual stops or route deviations.
- Use safety features when needed. Families should familiarize themselves with the Safety Center and Emergency Help functions before an emergency occurs.
After the Ride
- Confirm safe arrival. Parents can check that the trip has ended and that the teenager has reached the intended destination.
- Make sure the teen exits safely. Encourage teenagers to check their surroundings before leaving the vehicle.
- Collect personal belongings. Phones, wallets, bags, school items, and other valuables should be checked before leaving.
- Report concerns immediately. If something unexpected happens during a ride, families should use the appropriate in-app reporting and safety tools.
A checklist like this can be especially helpful for teenagers taking independent rides for the first time. It also gives families an opportunity to discuss practical travel habits and what to do when a journey does not go according to plan.

Designed for Everyday Family Routines
Activating Grab for Family is integrated into the existing Grab app.
Parents can invite a teenager using their mobile number or by sending a unique invitation link. Once the teen accepts the invitation, the parent approves the request and identifies the account as belonging to a teenager.
The relevant safety features are then activated.
Once linked, parents can manage shared payment methods and adjust available safety settings based on their household’s needs.
The setup is designed to fit naturally into the routines of families already using Grab for daily transportation.
“As a Grab driver-partner and a mother myself, I understand how important it is for parents to feel assured that their children are safe whenever they use ride-hailing services,” said Lisza Buscaino-Redulla, President of the United Transportation Coalition Philippines, Inc.
“Many families rely on platforms like Grab for the daily commutes of their teenage children, which is why we welcome the introduction of the Family Account as an important step toward giving parents assurance that their children get to wherever they need to be safely.”
Giving Teens Independence With Added Peace of Mind
For teenagers, learning to travel independently is often an important part of growing up.
As they begin attending activities outside school, meeting friends, and managing their own schedules, transportation becomes an important part of their independence.
For parents, however, that independence often comes with understandable concerns.
Grab for Family offers a middle ground by allowing teenagers to book and manage their own rides while giving parents the tools to remain informed throughout the journey.
For Filipino families navigating busy schedules and increasingly independent teenagers, the feature could become another useful tool for managing everyday mobility.
By combining ride-hailing convenience with live trip monitoring, communication features, and built-in safety tools, Grab for Family aims to make independent travel feel more manageable for both teenagers and the adults looking out for them.
