Beyond the Surf: Discovering the Slow and Soulful Side of Siargao
SIARGAO, PHILIPPINES — Siargao may be famous for powerful surf breaks, lively nightlife, stylish cafés, and a growing community of travelers and creatives, but there is another side to the island waiting to be discovered.

Slower Side of Siargao
It is quieter. Slower. More connected to nature and local life.
As more Filipinos move away from tightly packed itineraries and embrace slow travel, Siargao is emerging as one of the country’s most rewarding destinations for travelers seeking to experience a place beyond its headline attractions. From April to August, when the waves are generally calmer, the island offers an ideal opportunity to trade the rush of sightseeing for meaningful encounters, long meals, peaceful landscapes, and unhurried adventures.
Last July, Sunlight Air and The Henry Hotels and Resorts invited a curated group of guests from the travel, tourism, film, and creative industries to experience this side of the island during Where Stories Stay Still: A Siargao Changemakers Trip.
The four-day immersive journey brought together individuals whose work helps shape how Filipinos discover destinations, engage with communities, and tell travel stories. The group was called Changemakers, reflecting their ability to inspire more thoughtful and meaningful ways of traveling.
Rather than creating an itinerary focused on ticking attractions off a list, the experience encouraged guests to slow down and connect with Siargao through its people, food, traditions, and natural surroundings.
Sunlight Air and The Henry Hotels also partnered with Hertz Philippines to provide seamless land transfers between Manila and Clark, as well as transportation around Siargao. The arrangement allowed guests to spend less time worrying about logistics and more time appreciating the journey.
Exploring Siargao Beyond the Tourist Trail
For many visitors, Siargao begins and ends with surfing, island-hopping, and the bustling energy of General Luna. However, the Changemakers Trip invited guests to look beyond the island’s familiar attractions.

In partnership with Galatea Tours Siargao, the group traveled to Corregidor Island, originally known as Casulian Island.
Located roughly 45 minutes by boat from Siargao, Corregidor rewards travelers willing to take their time. A gentle hike of around 20 to 30 minutes leads to sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding sea and islands.
But reaching the viewpoint is only part of the experience.
The boat journey, the changing views of the coastline, and the slower rhythm of island life all become part of the adventure. It is the kind of destination that reminds travelers that sometimes the journey itself deserves just as much attention as the destination.
The group also explored the Malinao Mangroves, located in the quiet village of Malinao near Secret Beach.
Part of Siargao’s expansive mangrove ecosystem, the area offers a striking contrast to the island’s energetic surf culture. Calm waterways wind through lush mangrove forests, creating a peaceful environment where visitors can paddle, observe wildlife, and simply enjoy the silence.
Guests explored the waterways by paddleboard, kayak, and traditional baroto.
Fruit bats could occasionally be spotted among the trees, while birdsong and the gentle movement of water replaced the sounds of traffic and the bustle of crowded tourist spots.
Here, Siargao felt different.
There were no waves to chase and no nightlife schedules to keep. Instead, the mangroves offered a chance to slow down, listen, and appreciate one of the island’s most important natural landscapes.
It was a fitting reminder that some of Siargao’s most rewarding experiences are discovered only when travelers allow themselves enough time to notice them.
Learning From Siargao’s Local Community
Some of the island’s most memorable experiences are not found on its beaches or in its landscapes but in the people who shape its culture and sustain its traditions.

To offer guests a deeper connection to local life, Lokal Lab at The Hub in General Luna led an immersive kinilaw workshop that began with a visit to the local public market.
The experience introduced guests to Siargao’s community-to-table culture, where locally sourced ingredients support fishermen, farmers, and small-scale producers.
For many island communities, food is closely connected to both livelihood and place. Every ingredient carries a story, from the people who catch the seafood to those who grow and prepare the produce.
During the workshop, guests prepared Siargao-style kinilaw using tuba vinegar and freshly squeezed coconut milk.
The hands-on experience gave participants a greater appreciation not only for the dish itself but also for the people and sustainable practices behind its ingredients.
It was a simple but meaningful lesson in how food can become a gateway to understanding a destination.
Discovering Siargao’s Growing Culinary Scene
Like many travelers who visit Siargao, the people behind some of the island’s most popular restaurants originally came for the destination and stayed because they fell in love with its lifestyle.

They brought their culinary skills, creativity, and personal stories with them.
Over time, their restaurants became part of Siargao’s evolving identity, helping transform the island into one of the Philippines’ most exciting food destinations.
During the four-day journey, meals were given the same importance as sightseeing. Each restaurant became a destination in itself, offering guests the opportunity to linger over food and get to know the people and stories behind every concept.
Among the culinary stops were:
Kanin Baboy
Kanin Baboy is known for generous servings of Filipino comfort food, including its signature spicy lechon. It is a place where familiar flavors are served with the warmth and abundance that make a meal feel like a celebration.
LOKA Siargao
Located near Cloud 9, LOKA Siargao offers a relaxed beachfront setting where guests can enjoy wood-fired pizzas alongside a laid-back cocktail menu.
It is the kind of place that encourages diners to linger a little longer after the meal.
ROOTS Siargao
ROOTS Siargao offers a multi-course dining experience that celebrates seasonal ingredients, carefully layered flavors, and meticulous presentation.
The restaurant reflects the growing sophistication of Siargao’s dining scene while remaining connected to the island’s relaxed atmosphere.
Wild Siargao
At Wild Siargao, inventive, globally inspired flavors highlight the creativity that has helped make the island a destination for chefs and food lovers.
The menu reflects Siargao’s increasingly diverse culinary personality.
CEV Siargao
One of the pioneers of Siargao’s modern dining scene, CEV Siargao is known for its creative approach to kinilaw and ceviche.
Its dishes offer a contemporary interpretation of flavors closely associated with island life.
Kermit Siargao
Kermit remains one of Siargao’s go-to destinations for handmade pizzas and fresh pasta.
For many visitors, it has become part of the island experience itself, offering comforting food in an atmosphere that reflects Siargao’s relaxed and social spirit.
By slowing down and lingering over each meal, the Changemakers experienced how Siargao’s food scene is about much more than what is served on the table.
Behind every restaurant is a story of people who arrived, created, stayed, and became part of the island’s growing community.
What the Changemakers Took Home
By the end of the four-day Where Stories Stay Still: A Siargao Changemakers Trip, the guests left with more than memories of scenic views and memorable meals.
They also gained a deeper understanding of what makes Siargao worth slowing down for.
Through conversations with locals, encounters with community members, peaceful landscapes, and shared meals, the group experienced a side of the island that exists beyond conventional tourism.
By bringing together people who influence how Filipinos travel, eat, and tell stories, Sunlight Air and The Henry Hotels and Resorts hope to encourage a broader perspective of Siargao.
The journey also highlighted the importance of collaboration in creating meaningful change.
“Alone, an airline, a hotel, a tour operator, or a local business can only do so much. But together, as a village with people who believe in the destination and its communities, every effort can help move the needle and create a greater impact,” Lee said.
Sunlight Air CEO Ryna Brito-Garcia shared a similar perspective.
“This trip reminded us that travel isn’t just about bringing people to a destination, but about helping travelers connect with the communities that call these places home. We, as an airline, also play a key role in the ecosystem—supporting local businesses, celebrating local culture, and creating opportunities for destinations and the people behind them to thrive.”
That shared commitment continues to shape Sunlight Air’s partnerships and collaborations with local communities.

Why Slow Travel May Be the Best Way to Experience Siargao
Siargao will always have its famous waves, vibrant cafés, island adventures, and nightlife.
But travelers who look beyond the usual itinerary may discover something equally memorable.
They may find themselves paddling quietly through mangroves, learning how a traditional dish is prepared, hiking toward an island viewpoint, or spending an extra hour over dinner listening to the story behind a restaurant.
Sometimes, the best way to experience Siargao is not by doing more.
It is by slowing down.
For travelers looking to discover the island beyond its best-known attractions, Sunlight Air Vacations, in partnership with The Henry Hotels and Resorts, offers thoughtfully curated experiences designed to introduce visitors to the people, places, flavors, and stories that make Siargao worth savoring.
The Changemakers Trip was made possible in collaboration with Hertz Philippines, Galatea Tours Siargao, Lokal Lab, and restaurant partners LOKA, Kanin Baboy, CEV Siargao, Wild Siargao, and Kermit Restaurant. Adding thoughtful touches of comfort and craftsmanship to the journey were Messy Bessy, Bagoyan, Abel PH, and Primer Group of Companies.
In a destination often associated with chasing the next wave, Siargao’s quieter side offers a different kind of adventure—one where the best experiences may be the moments that ask travelers to simply stay still.
