Are you worried you won’t enjoy your trip to Kuala Lumpur just because you’re on a budget? Don’t worry. Here are 10 things that you can enjoy for free in Malaysia’s capital:
KL Petronas Towers
1. Take a wacky picture with the Petronas Twin Towers.
Not enough money to reach the top of Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic buildings? Then head down to the Suria KLCC mall and take your photo with them in the background. The best spot to take a photo with them is near the man-made lake outside this mall; in particular, stand near the small hill.
2. Discover the past through the Dataran Merdeka Heritage Walk.
Learn the stories behind the beautiful buildings surrounding Dataran Merdeka. This 2.5 hour walking tour will take you around 11 historical buildings, many built during the colonial era. 3. Get cultured by visiting all the free museums and galleries in the capital.
With the range of museums and galleries offering free admission in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll not have enough time to explore them all. These include the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery, home to an impressive scale model of the capital. Another is the National Textiles Museum, which showcases various textiles, jewelry, and accessories.
4. Reconnect with nature at the Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park.
Despite being a highly urbanized metropolis, Kuala Lumpur has not given up all its green spaces. One of these is the Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park, which has various attractions. These include the Perdana Botanical Park, Deer Park, Hibiscus Garden, and KL Orchid Garden.
5. Play on the Piano Staircase at Berjaya Times Square.
Admittedly, this shopping mall is best known for its indoor theme park and rollercoaster. But if you’re not willing to pay a pretty penny for the entrance fee, you can just play around with this attraction. Located near the main entrance, this staircase plays a note every time you land on a step.
6. Try temple-hopping.
In many parts of the world, some of the finest architecture can be found in places of worship. Kuala Lumpur is no exception. Among the must-see places are Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and Guan Di Temple in Chinatown, St. Mary’s Cathedral near Dataran Merdeka, and Jamek Mosque (Masjid Jamek).

7. Explore Brickfields with the Free Little India Guided Cultural Walks.
You don’t need to fly to India to discover more about Indian culture. Just join a free walking tour at Brickfields, which is more popularly known as Little India. It will take you to 20 historical and cultural attractions such as the Temple of Fine Arts. These tours are held every Saturday from 9 to 11:30 am, starting at Vivekananda Ashram. 8. Watch out for fun events.
In a city like Kuala Lumpur, there’s bound to be something happening at any time of the year. And you can always join in the fun. For example, you can enjoy watching the colorful parades during Hari Merdeka or Malaysia’s National Day celebrations on August 31. Or you can join the open houses during Chinese New Year (January or February), Hari Raya (August), Deepavali (October), and Christmas (December).
With all these events being free to join, you’ll surely enjoy your stay in Kuala Lumpur, even if you’re on a tight budget.
