Jackson Wyoming: A City You Probably Weren’t Planning on Visiting But Should

Many people view Jackson, Wyoming, as a place to stay on their way somewhere else. Although that is true for travelers heading to Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, or Grand Targhee, there are many great things to do in Jackson. Getting to and Around Jackson

Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is a small airport serviced with connection services to most major cities through Delta, American, United, and Frontier. Although JAC is one of the smaller airports in the country, great deals on flights can be found all throughout the year.  Additionally, there is free WiFi provided in the terminal, a restaurant, and gift shop for those last-minute gifts to bring home.

When considering options from the airport, there are several options for transportation to town; car rentals with major car rental companies, taxi cabs, paid shuttle services, and the bus system are your choices. Renting a car is always a good option, but it is important to know that there are frequent snow storms in Jackson which can cause difficulties for drivers. Additionally, while parking in town is free, many of the local tourist sites do have paid parking. Furthermore, hotels like the White Buffalo Club offer hotel shuttle service to and from the airport.

Where to Stay

There are many great hotels in Jackson; hotels near the airport, hotels in the Arbor-Vista neighborhood, and hotels in Northbrook.  Where you should stay depends on what you have planned.

The Town Square is full of unique shops, great restaurants, and the famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. For the vacationer looking for an interesting day of shopping and exploring local culture, choosing a downtown hotel is the best choice. Now, on the other hand, if you prefer being outdoors, skiing, hiking, and exploring our countries natural wonders, then choosing a hotel on the outside of town may be more fitting. In Jackson, the focus can quickly move from outdoor recreation to inside culture. The Jackson Hole Playhouse is a pleasant surprise for guests. Many visitors are shocked to find not only great actors working, but also amazing singers. Town Square has several galleries and quaint, eclectic shops, so often visitors forget there are two stunning museums to see. The two Jackson Hole Museums feature different local culture; one focuses on Native American history,  and the other on the settlers. Both museums are nicely done, and a must see for all who visit Jackson, Wyoming.
