Some Like it S.M.A.R.T. and Hot in Baler

S.M.A.R.T. Beach House in Baler

S.M.A.R.T. Beach House, as fate had it, became our home in Baler for the next two nights.

We had left our transient place at the back beach in the early morning to go to a place where we could have a lovely breakfast in front of the beach. With S.M.A.R.T. never leaving my thoughts, I led my family there.

There was a full swing of fresh breeze billowing in the still quiet place, arousing exhilarating energy from the depths of the ocean. Only a few people was hanging out at S.M.A.R.T.’s wide lawn and the same as the sandy gray beach, giving us a perfect surrounding that is both gratifying and promising.

With that, we approached the counter where food is ordered. Behind it stood a tall and cheerful man, which as instinct told me was the owner of the place. It turned out correct. Noriel, as his name, and his wife, Shiela who was cooking food in the kitchen, had their loving hands completely on their resort.

We ordered fresh fruits from kuya Noriel, an omelet, two cups of coffee and one hot chocolate in sachets. We then situated ourselves at the table and chairs out in the open air and appreciated our beautiful beach view while the food was being prepared.

In a few minutes, our orders arrived and we were able to relax and enjoy our breakfast quietly.

I asked kuya Noriel if there was a vacant room for two nights and he said yes. So as soon as we digested our food, we took a tricycle , checked out from the transient house and returned to S.M.A.R..T. with our luggage.

Named after the initials of their family, the resort’s sweet-smiling staff showed us our room at the ground floor of their new two-storey building, across the old, both of which house rooms for couples, families and groups.

Ours was a room made warm and cozy by the wooden queen bed with a snug mattress, the blue-colored sofa bed, the glass door that led to a tiny balcony, and the clean bathroom.

As inviting as the room was, we decided to embrace the excitement on the beach and save ourselves 100php for every hour before the standard check-in time of 2pm.

We stayed out on the beach, anticipating the quick intervals of incoming waves and jumping on them, one after another. Then we stayed on the shore, and engineered a castle with a tunnel on the sand.

Around noon, we officially checked in our room, accounting 200php on our bill, and took a much-needed nap there.

A few hours later, we walked out to the beach to order lunch. As a vegetarian ordering from a Filipino menu composed of All-Day Filipino ‘Silog’ Breakfast (meat variants with fried egg and fried rice), I was afforded only with a choice of fresh pako, that came with salted eggs and tomatoes or omelet. I ate the pako at this time, while my family ate Bangsilog (Bangus, Sinangan, Itlog).

The next day, I handed ate Shiela a bunch of vegetables which I purchased from the market like kalabasa, pechay and gata and requested for her to cook it and it was the best meal I had so far in Baler.

At times, my daughter got a cone of ice cream at the resort’s in-house convenient store where the goods are priced inexpensively; a liter of distilled water was 30 pesos each.

The sunrise is also a major attraction on this part of Baler. In this season it is viewed rising from the easterly hills after 6 am and instantly exhausting heat into the ocean, making way for a soothing yet rude-awakening dip.

Meeting wonderful visitors added to the healthy air of our stay at S.M.A.R.T. They were a group of lawyers who fell in love with Baler 15 months ago and since then made it a monthly pilgrimage to drive up the long road and take a brief and rejuvenating surfing holiday away from their mundane city life.

Our holiday was perfect throughout our stay at S.M.A.R.T. Beach House. We slept and ate well, felt and exchanged good vibes from the owners, staff, surfing instructors and other guests, indulged in the fantastic weather, witnessed the full moon and the sun rising, and enjoyed the gray sandy beach, as well as the wavy ocean under the hot, hot sun.

And though we did not surf, it was a perfect reason, among many to return to this homely beach resort and explore more of this fantastic surfing province.
