Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 inaugurated
The new Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 was inaugurated last June 7, 2018 and will start operating on July 1, 2018. The multi-billion project which experienced setbacks was finished before the deadline according to GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC) President Louie B. Ferrer.
The high-end airport which serves domestic flights 7 carriers also caters to 22 international destinations. MCIA is also in negotiations with airport operators in Australia, Japan, and Sweden to expand their operations to other destinations. They also wish to cater to Chinese tourists who are avid spenders and gaming enthusiasts.
This is a big move not only for the province but the whole nation as it will pave for more routes in and out of the Philippines as well as around the country.
The world-class facility is made of both modern and indigenous materials. The roof is made of glulam, a laminated material from timber. It has sleek geometrical patterns kind of like the waves by the sea. It rises up to 15 meters so natural light can come through transparent walls. It was imported from Austria with a very long lifespan. Design Associates from Hong Kong is part of the team that designed the structure in collaboration with Cebuano and other renowned Filipino artists like Budji Layug, Royal Pinda, and Kenneth Cobonpue.
Since Cebu is gifted with beautiful beaches, the airport gives a beach resort vibe. While the timber arches are the focal point of the facility, the mother of pearls in the tiles are also inviting. The ambiance of the airport is warm, just like any typical Filipino home you would visit; friendly and accommodating.
It measures 65,000 square meters and has a capacity of 12.5 million passengers each year with seven passenger boarding bridges which is expandable to twelve. There are 48 check-in counters, 12 escalators, 15 elevators and parking of up to 750 cars. There’s a mall, restaurants, retail shops, hotel, and casino.
The new airport is also equipped with state of the art boarding pass scanners and self-check-in kiosks.
SSP Group was tapped to design and operate the new Terminal 2 food and beverage concessionaires. The British food and beverage operator is the same company who caters to Hong Kong International Airport, Heathrow Airport in London and JFK in New York.
SSP Group operates in 125 airports, including Hong Kong, Heathrow in London and JFK in New York, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport said in a statement.
With the opening of the new Cebu Airport Terminal, MCIA raised the international terminal fee from P750 to P850. Domestic passengers need not worry because the terminal fees for domestic flights will remain at P200.
MCIA Terminal 2 will be converted into Terminal 1 while Terminal 1 will become Terminal 2 and will undergo renovation and cater to domestic flights.
