Another must-visit food spot in Negros Occidental, Lanai by FreshStart, is a farm-to-table restaurant in Bacolod that offers a unique al fresco dining setup. It’s a casual dining place with a lanai dining area, a roofed open space often attached to an entrance or built at the back of the house. A lanai also functions as an extension of the living room, but outdoors.

Known as the champion of the slow food movement in Negros Occidental, Uy’s showcases the importance of organic produce, making healthy foods more flavorful.

What’s inside the resto

The facade and interiors of the Lanai by FreshStart evoke a homey vibe, feeling like you’re dining at your grandmother’s home. From the exterior, it’s filled with wooden louver windows and a large wooden door that welcomes you inside. Once in the restaurant, you’ll be greeted by its relaxing vibe and minimalistic industrial design, from tropical plants to wooden furniture.

The walls are painted white, and the open truss ceiling design adds a natural light and airy atmosphere to the interior. Aside from the vibrant wall painting, the main feature of the Lanai is the bar, where diners can watch while their drinks are being crafted. It features a hardwood slab counter and black painted wood and metal, the perfect spot to take your IG shots.

But the most unique feature of the bar is the eye-catching glass jars on the counter filled with dried fruits, plants, and bark, making it look like a herbal or wizard shop. You’ll also see locally-made Vodka and Gin on the counter, such as the salted caramel Kanto Vodka, Agimat Vodka made from Bacolod Sugarcane, and the Agimat Gin extracted from ylang-ylang flowers and indigenous fruits, like pink pomelo, yutukon, and dalandan.

What to eat

The menu of Lanai was carefully chosen by Chef Patrick Go, a remarkable chef in Manila with Negrense roots. With its bar as the main attraction, Lanai offers varying drinks and cocktails prepared using local ingredients, liquors, and spirits. Chef Kalel Demetrio, a liquid chef promoting the farm-to-table concept, makes Lanai’s unique drinks.
