In all the trips that I have had the chance to make over the years, I have always tried my best to discover more about the local culture. I’ve always made a point to intentionally understand the culture of the country that I visit to overcome any form of cultural shock, breaking down the emotional barrier between me and the local population. The sooner you are assimilated into the local culture, the less likely you are to commit a faux pas. This is why I was obsessed in traveling!
Taman Monument Park Entrance
During our recent trip to Kuala Terengganu along with other Malaysia Asean East Coast Trail participants, we had the chance to discover the local culture and some of the most interesting historical sites in the state of Terengganu. Among the astonishing historical sites we visited, the one that has captivated my heart the most is surely the Islamic Civilization Park.

Being one of the primary attractions of the Wan Man Islands, this “edutainment” park allows its visitors to learn about the spread of the Islamic Civilization in a whole different way, putting you in direct touch with the history behind the place.
Replica of Suleyman Mosque in Turkey
Locally known as Taman Tamadun Islam, the park features replicas of the twenty two most well-known monuments of the Islamic culture (such as the Taj Mahal located in India and the Al-Hambra Citadel in Spain), it provides an impressive demonstration of the beauty of Islamic architecture. Being a Catholic, I found this visit highly educational as it is a completely different way of learning and getting to know a culture. It allowed me to discover many different aspects of the Islamic culture that I had previously ignored.

I believe that this permitted me to enjoy the rest of my trip more, as I was more understanding towards the behavior of locals around me. Interacting with people was a more pleasant experience from that point onward as well, precisely for the same reason – I felt a better connection to their culture and was able to more easily engage in conversation that actually had a meaning, as opposed to trying to make idle chat to pass the time as I usually do on those trips.

Another positive aspect of that experience was the facility in having access to the attraction, as there are various ways to get to it – for example, a comfortable shuttle service from the city centre that will permit you reach the destination without having to worry about when and where to catch public transportation. The surrounding area deserves a mention in itself, as you will additionally have the opportunity to find yourself immersed in the beautiful landscape, along with the chance to undertake activities such as river cruise (you can book your river cruise at your Hotel in Terengganu or you can buy a river cruise package upon arrival in the park).
River Cruise Boats
In conclusion, if you are traveling to Malaysia I would strongly advise you to pay a visit to the Islamic Civilization Park in Kuala Terengganu as it will allow you to discover more about the Islamic cultures and its various architectural beauties. In particular, you should check it out if you are with your kids, as this can be a great opportunity to introduce them to the ideas of different cultures and religions in a more unique and memorable way, and not like they’re taught in school.
