On our fourth day in the state of Terengganu, we finally got the chance to explore some of the famous tourist spots in Kuala Terengganu. The name Kuala Terengganu means the “The Harbour of Terengganu”, referring to the broad expanse of the Terengganu River estuary which empties into the ocean at this point.

After having breakfast at Ri-Yaz Heritage Marina Resort & Spa where we stayed overnight, we left the hotel early to explore Malaysia’s largest city as well as the state and royal capital of Terengganu state.

Our first stop was at Nur Zahirah Complex – a place that promotes Songket production. Songket is hand-woven in silk or cotton, and intricately patterned with gold or silver threads.

Upon arriving at the Songket Complex, we were ushered to the second level to checkout the gallery showcasing products that uses Songket. With Mannequins wearing trendy dresses made with Songket, they also sell some of the products displayed in the gallery.

After visiting the Songket Gallery, we went down to the area where some locals are demonstrating the process of making the Songket.

Our visit to Nur Zahirah Complex was followed by a cruising experience at the Islamic Civilization Park where the famous Crystal Floating Mosque can be found.

Situated on the Wan Man Island, the entire park has a total land area of 22 hectares and it houses beautiful replicas of some of the worlds famous mosques. Upon arriving at the park, we first had a 45 minute Taman Tamadun Islam River Cruise.

The tour guide share some interesting facts about the area and one of the most intriguing place she pointed out was the island named Pulau Mayat or Dead Men Island. As we continue our cruise, we also saw the Crystal Floating Mosque up close.

The Crystal Mosque or Masjid Kristal is considered as unique it is the first and only mosque built from steel and glass, hence the resonating crystal-like image.

After the relaxing cruise, we proceeded to Islamic Civilization Park that is also locally known as Taman Tamadun Islam. We had a rolling tour around the park while enjoying the view of many famous Islamic monuments including Taj Mahal of India, Al-Hambra Citadel of Spain and other famous mosques around the world.

Before we head back to the hotel, we had lunch at one of the restaurants inside the park. After the quick lunch we headed back to Ri-Yaz Heritage Resort & Spa to freshen up and prepare for our afternoon activities.

While the tour operators are having Business to Business Travel Mart event with resorts and tour operators from Terengganu and Kelantan, the media participants had a separate itinerary.

Our first stop was at one of the famous Keropok Lekor factory. The place was crowded when we arrived, one proof that this snack was really a local comfort food.

Keropok Lekor is a traditional fish snack in the state of Terrenganu. Lekor or Keropok Lekor is made from fish and sago flour and seasoned with salt and a bit of sugar. I can be served as steamed or deep friend although I like the deep friend version more.

After visiting the Keropok Lekor shop, we proceeded to Noor Arfa Craft Complex – a huge shopping complex selling Batik products and other local souvenir products from Terengganu State. We first visited an area that showcases how batik products are being made then we headed to the shopping center located few steps away from the batik processing area.

Aside from Batik products, the handicraft center also sells dresses made from Songket, basketwares and other souvenir items. I was able to buy two pairs of Seluar a traditional Mens Pants in Terengganu.

We were supposed to visit other attractions in Terengganu like the Floating Mosque or Tengku Tengah Zaharah – the first real floating mosque in Terengganu located near the estuary of Kuala Ibai River but we ran out of time so we headed back to the hotel to prepare for our dinner at Primula Beach Resort.

It was past 8pm when we arrived at Primula Beach Resort for our dinner hosted by the Terengganu State. After a short program, we enjoyed a sumptuous buffet dinner showcasing the local food and delicacies of Terengganu state. I really love Malaysian food, it has the right amount of spice and it doesn’t have an overwhelming smell like the Indian food.

After dinner, we headed back to Ri-Yaz Heritage Marina Resort & Spa to rest…
