“AirAsia’s multiple flights today herald a bigger, brighter and better opportunities for travel, business, and tourism in Mindanao. We are here to make air travel more affordable, convenient and reliable, and we are incredibly excited to paint Mindanao skies red,” AirAsia Philippines CEO Captain Dexter Comendador said.

To celebrate AirAsia’s expansion in Mindanao, the airline used its brand-new Airbus A320 to launch its newest flights. The said brand-new aircraft was fitted with wing-tip devices or sharklets that enable savings of 4% in fuel consumption or corresponding to an annual carbon reduction of around 1,000 tons per aircraft. The “sharklets” also help to reduce fuel burn and emissions by improving the plane’s aerodynamics.

AirAsia flight Z2 691 piloted by Captain Comendador, the airline’s flying CEO, left Manila’s NAIA Terminal 4 at 8 a.m. with 100 percent pax load.

As part of the celebration, AirAsia hosted a game during the flight and guess what? Two very lucky passengers received a free roundtrip flight to any domestic destination!

Upon arrival at around 9:30 a.m in the Laguindingan International Airport, Flight Z2 691 was greeted with a traditional Water Cannon Salute.

As part of the program, the richness of the Northern Mindanao culture was showcased by a series of Higaonon dance routines.

Distinguished guests led by Misamis Oriental Board Member Nancy Madjos representing Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano, Cagayan de Oro City Councilor Ian Nacaya representing the office of the mayor, Department of Tourism Regional Director Marie Elaine Unchuan and airport officer Wilfredo Encinas graced the welcome ceremonies.

“We are a member of the AirAsia Group the leading and largest low-cost carrier in Asia, servicing the most extensive network of over 135 destinations across all ASEAN countries, Asia, India, Australia, China, Middle East and Hawaii in the US. Our commitment is to connect the Philippines especially the underserved cities outside Metro Manila to AirAsia’s massive network via direct or seamless fly-thru service in our main hub in Kuala Lumpur which can now be accessed from Cagayan de Oro to Cebu or Manila,” Comendador said.

The welcome ceremony ended with cake cutting and by giving away additional free roundtrip tickets from different routes to Cagayan de Oro to 4 attendees via raffle draw.

With AirAsia’s arrival in Northern Mindanao, Department of Tourism Region X is now preparing for the expected boost of tourism. The public and private sectors are working hand in hand for the development of tourism products, transportation, and training for locals.
