Surviving Caramoan Peninsula

The Caramoan Islands is a tropical paradise with pristine waters, abundant marine life, and very hospitable locals. Sure, that description may fit any other island in the Philippines, but there’s something about Caramoan Peninsula that drew the producers of the hit reality-based TV show Survivor to it. The islands are unspoiled.

The islands are located at the farthest tip of Camarines Sur in Bicol, almost lying at the Pacific Ocean. It is characterized by white sand beaches, huge limestone cliffs, and lush vegetation which makes the islands and islets very habitable.

A Showcase of The Island’s Beauty

The international survivor series came to Caramoan in 2005. The first year showcased Caramoan and placed the islands on the map in terms of tourism. While no structures and large hotels can be seen on the main islands, there are reasonably decent lodgings such as inns nearby. Tourists who want to go to Caramoan for a visit should be prepared for a rugged and wild landscape. This is nothing like Boracay or Puerto Galera.

Here are few tips on how to survive a trip to the Caramoan islands:

1. Schedule your visit between November and May

The seas can be particularly rough in Caramoan Peninsula. Locals say the best time to visit is between November and May. This is also a good time to book any of the hostels and inns ahead of time. The accomodations are decent, and hospitality is abundant. Tourists will never feel like a stranger here.

2. Be ready to rough it up

Caramoan islands are best explored and experience as nature intended it to be. Guests are encouraged to pitch a tent in the wilderness and sleep under the stars. If you don’t have your own camp equipment, there are places to rent one. Just be ready with some bug spray and your own set of provisions. Not everyone can spear a fish or drink coconut water like the Survivor contestants.

3. Know your boundaries

Sad but you can’t go exploring just anywhere. The Survivor franchise signed a contract to film or shoot at Caramoan Peninsula until 2033. So be careful where you trek or head to, you might disturb a team filming the plight of survivors trying to make the best of what they can on a deserted island.

Guided tours are also available. Given that there are no modern features or amenities on the islands itself, it is best to go with local Caramoan guides.
