Dumaguete City holds Dragon Boat Challenge 2017

Dumaguete City has held Dragon Boat Challenge 2017, which was participated by its local dragon boat teams and teams from Metro Manila, Cebu, and Rizal.

This year’s game, which took place last April 8, has followed the successful test competition of dragon boat race in 2016. The local government of Dumaguete City wants the Dragon Boat Challenge to be an annual event participated by local, national, and international teams.

Participating teams in the recent Dumaguete Dragon Boat Challenge were Dumaguete City’s Hilera, Brgy. Banilad, Brgy.Tinago, Sta. Monica Bulldogs, Fitbox, and FU Greyhound Paddlers as well as Manila’s Aqua Fortis, Cebu’s Ariya, and Rizal’s Taytay Girls.

But a new star has emerged from this year’s race: the Calindagan Yellowfins of Brgy. Calindagan in Dumaguete City.

Team Hilera may be a well-trained dragon boat team; but, the paddlers of Calindagan Yellowfins have been paddling for their living. Its team members are fishermen.

Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio “Ipe” Remollo said the city is taking advantage of its proximity to the waters by promoting water sports like dragon boat.

According to Mayor Ipe, his administration is pushing for sports tourism in Dumaguete City.

“We gradually develop (our city for sports tourism). Even with the Philippine Sports Commission, we have a good relationship and they recognize Dumaguete as ready, willing, and able to host events, sporting events. On the hospitality of our people, everyone, people will appreciate it,” said Mayor Ipe.

“Dumaguete is very ideal for events, especially sporting events. It is a quaint city with a nice environment, very safe both for athletes, tourists, and guests,” Mayor added.

“Our administration is giving sports a great value and emphasis. Sports is a great equalizer like education,” Mayor added.

Moreover, Dumaguete’s Dragon Boat Challenge 2017 was supported by Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation (PCKF).

PCKF has provided four dragon boats for this year’s race.

According to Coach Leonora “Len” Escollante, the Philippines has been bringing home gold medals from world championships in dragon boat race.

The national team also fly to different parts of the world including Europe and United States for their training.
