11 ASEAN Nations Unite Through Music and Film in Seas Unbroken

CCP’s Seas Unbroken Unites Filmmakers From 11 ASEAN Nations Through Music and Film

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is bringing Southeast Asia’s creative communities together through Seas Unbroken, a cinematic music video celebrating regional unity, cultural diversity, and shared aspirations as the Philippines hosts ASEAN in 2026.

Produced by Voyage Film Studios, the project brings together filmmakers and creatives from all 11 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states to tell a collective story of the region through the experiences of its people.

Rather than showcasing famous landmarks and tourist attractions, Seas Unbroken explores the everyday moments that connect Southeast Asians. Its imagery captures livelihoods shaped by the sea, families sharing meals, vibrant urban communities, and children carrying cultural traditions into the future.

The result is a cinematic portrait of Southeast Asia that highlights the region’s diverse identities while celebrating the experiences, values, and hopes its people share.

Southeast Asian Stories Through a Shared Cinematic Vision

Directed and edited by Chuck Gutierrez and produced by Baby Ruth Villarama of Voyage Film Studios, Seas Unbroken combines perspectives from filmmakers across the ASEAN region into one cohesive visual narrative.

Von De Guzmán composed, wrote, and arranged the original music, with vocals by Sofronio Vasquez. Together, the film and its soundtrack explore how artistic expression can create connections across national and cultural boundaries.

For Gutierrez, the creative challenge was to bring together the perspectives of 11 countries without losing each community’s individual character.

“Our seas may separate our shores, but they also connect our stories. We didn’t want to create a travelogue of Southeast Asia. We wanted to tell a human story,” Gutierrez said.

He explained that the editing process revealed similarities in the rhythms of everyday life across the region, despite differences in culture and national identity.

The film reflects this approach by focusing on people and their experiences rather than presenting Southeast Asia solely through familiar travel imagery.

Regional Collaboration Built on Creative Partnerships

Behind Seas Unbroken is a network of professional relationships developed among Southeast Asian filmmakers over more than a decade.

Voyage Film Studios brought together established collaborators and new creative partners, many of whom were working with one another for the first time. Their collective experience helped shape a production that draws on authentic local perspectives while contributing to a shared regional story.

For Villarama, the project represents the possibilities that emerge when long-standing professional relationships develop into meaningful creative partnerships.

She described how the challenges, friendships, and networks built by filmmakers across Southeast Asia over the years helped bring the project to life. Despite many team members meeting through the production, each contributed a distinct perspective to the film.

This collaborative approach also reinforces the role of independent creative communities in strengthening cultural understanding across the region.

Original Music Celebrates ASEAN’s Shared Aspirations

Music serves as another connecting element in Seas Unbroken, bringing the film’s different national perspectives together through a common emotional narrative.

De Guzmán’s original composition draws inspiration from Southeast Asia’s histories, cultures, and aspirations. Its message centers on solidarity, peace, and prosperity while recognizing the importance of preserving each nation’s distinct identity.

The composer said he wanted the music to reflect how different histories and cultures remain connected through shared seas and hopes for the future.

Through its combination of original music and documentary-inspired imagery, the project presents regional unity as something grounded in people’s everyday lives, experiences, and ambitions.

Why Seas Unbroken Matters as the Philippines Hosts ASEAN 2026

The project arrives at an important moment for ASEAN, which welcomed Timor-Leste as its 11th member in 2025. As the regional organization continues to strengthen cooperation among its members, cultural initiatives offer another way to explore the relationships that connect Southeast Asian communities.

While diplomacy, trade, and political partnerships shape regional cooperation, arts and culture give people opportunities to understand one another through shared experiences and creative expression.

For the Cultural Center of the Philippines, commissioning Seas Unbroken is part of the Philippine arts and cultural sector’s contribution to the country’s hosting of ASEAN 2026.

The initiative shows how filmmakers, musicians, and other creatives can engage regionally by sharing stories that cross borders while staying rooted in their communities.

A Southeast Asian Identity Told by Its People

Through the perspectives of filmmakers from all 11 ASEAN member states, Seas Unbroken presents a region defined by both diversity and connection.

Its focus on everyday life offers a different way to experience Southeast Asia, moving beyond conventional destination imagery to highlight the people, traditions, and communities that give the region its character.

For travel and culture enthusiasts, the project also reminds us that understanding a destination means more than visiting its most famous attractions. Local stories, family traditions, livelihoods, and cultural practices offer equally meaningful ways to appreciate the places and people that make Southeast Asia distinctive.

As the Philippines takes on its ASEAN hosting role in 2026, Seas Unbroken brings these perspectives into a shared creative space, celebrating 11 nations through different voices and a collective vision for the future.

The film ultimately underscores how art can build connections across borders while allowing each culture to retain its own identity.
