Airport Review: Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2
Table of Contents
(Cebu City, Philippines) – The new Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 started its operations last July 1 and I was one of the travel writers who were invited by Cebu Pacific to experience and witness the grandeur of the airport.
This huge structure is the new Cebu Passenger Terminal Building or better known as Terminal 2 (T2). Built with specific goals such as transforming the facility into a renowned travel hub that local and foreign tourists will love and showing guests true Filipino hospitality and local culture. To be honest, after seeing the timber made ceiling doesn’t fail to impress. It has also become the 2nd largest airport facility in the Philippines.
But it isn’t only the structure that guests will love but more importantly, this hub will turn into a gateway of sorts between Visayas and the rest of the world. The airport utilizes flights to and from 23 international destinations and 33 domestic destinations and accommodating 26 airline carriers.
These things make MCIA T2 a major airport and one that can service millions of passengers each year.
That said, here are the ten things I love about Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2.
It’s world class with a local vibe
This is the first time that an airport used this much timber. In fact, the imported wood called Glulam Arches from Austria is the focal point of the airport. While all the materials used are special on their own, it’s really those timbers that provide that unique appearance what with its geometrical patterns plus its transparent and soundproof wall. It’s also note-worthy that the wood has a fire and seismic resistance properties.
Concrete Flooring that uses Mother of Pearl
The timber wood already gives off a tropical vibe and the crushed mother of pearl intensifies that even more. The shells which came from the surrounding Cebu islands can make you feel like you’re walking on a white sand beach. So whether you’re on a pleasure trip or business trip, this gateway makes you feel relaxed and enjoying your surroundings.
Admit it, Instagram is not just for Selfie loving Filipinos. What’s good about this new airport is it’s truly Instagram worthy. You can actually strike a pose in every corner and get a perfect shot. So, you really won’t be needing any filters this time because when you click that camera, your selfie is Instagram ready. Check my Instagram post here (shameless plug).
Shop till you Drop
People never grow tired of shopping so what’s nice about this airport is that there are two Duty Free inside. You can find them at the pre-departure area and arrival area. This is where you can buy chocolates, perfumes, cosmetics, wines and spirits, gadgets and other interesting souvenirs that are proudly made in Cebu.
Duty Free Mactan has a combined floor area of over 1,200 square meters. You can also shop at WH Smith and Plug and Play plus other shops in T2.
Resort themed Check-in Counters
Checking-in for a flight can be a breeze with their check-in counters that are equipped with synthetic stone counter tops. These counter tops are adorned with an environment-friendly fiber synthetic mesh weaving by Dedon. The counter tops are also accented by LED mood lights.
State of the Art Baggage Handling System
It’s frustrating for passengers when there are mishaps with their baggage but in T2, travelers can be assured that their baggage are handled with the utmost care with the airport’s high-speed baggage handling system. It’s equipped with a four-level inline screening system, this technology ensures all checked-in baggage are free of security-restricted items while speeding up baggage movement.
Moss is a Must!
MCIA T2 isn’t stopping there. It’s quite impressive that they’ve put Moss Walls at their washrooms. It’s a simple way to liven up the area. These live moss from Italy can help stabilize humidity and improve the quality of air.
Mahogany wood which is local to Cebu was used for cubicle doors. They also practice segregation inside the airport.
Coffee, Tea or Food
And if the shopping isn’t enough, you can choose from a wide selection of eating spots which are operated by British company SSP Group, the same company which operates in some of the world’s busiest airports of the world. It’s guaranteed that there’s someone for everyone’s discriminating taste like Asian Kitchen, Bon Chon, Burger King, Cabin Bar, Camden, Coffee Bean and Tea leaf, Nippon Ramen and Ritazza. For those who are looking for Cebu Starbucks Mugs, buy it in the city, theres no Starbucks outlet yet at T2.
The Plaza Premium Lounge is also a place to stay for people waiting for their flights. Whether you’re a passenger on business class, premium card holder or regular passenger who paid for lounge access, you’re allowed to stay there and enjoy its facilities like their internet workstation with Wi-Fi and take comfort in its food and beverage offering. Walk-in guests can also use the facility at an affordable rate.
Get Pampered at the Spa
Since T2 wants their passengers to experience the best treatment, they also have a spa where you can get a massage so you can relax before your flight. Just don’t get left behind because their service is intoxicating.
More Amenities to enjoy
On the other hand, there’s a spacious area for arriving passengers where they can get their baggage from the conveyor belt. You can get a car rental and hotel and resort accommodations booth right at the airport in case you haven’t booked one. There are also paging system and telephone services available inside the arrival area.
To add, there are enough sitting areas for passengers waiting for their flights. Bottle refilling stations with hot and cold water dispenser can also be found inside the airport. Flight scheducles can be seen throughout the area using LG OLED TV.
For a limited time, Cebu Pacific installed a flight hub inside the departure area for passengers to learn more about Cebu Pacific’s routes and promos.
Lastly, passengers can buy from snack bars and pasalubong shops to bring with them home. I guess my favorite space ATM is the CBTL, it has more space for customers and they also have sockets where you can juice up your gadgets while waiting for your flight.
What a terrific experience seeing Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 was for me! As a frequent traveler, I’m into the service they give which is world-class but at the same time I also felt comfortable inside this impressive structure. I’m amazed by the architecture, the kindness of the staff, facilities and the over-all service of the airport that I’m excited to traveling to Cebu and going through MCIA T2 every chance I get.
