The Biggest Airport in the World in Beijing Will Open to the World in 2019
Beijing’s economy is booming, and it now needs an airport which will be capable of handling its now growing population. Millions of tourists are now visiting the city annually. Based on reports, the new record-breaking airport will be in the southern district of Daxing in Beijing.
The Beijing Daxing International Airport is set to open in the Southern Daxing district in 2019. According to Travel and Leisure, it will serve as a way to meet the growing needs of the air transportation in Beijing and to enhance the country’s civil aviation presence.
The airport will become the new base for China Eastern Airlines Group Corporation and the China Southern Airlines Group Corporation. This will put the alliance members of SkyTeam, a global airline group under one roof. This will allow easy flight connections for passengers, especially for those with connecting flights.
Based on the statements given by BuroHappold Engineering, part of the consortium team who won the competition of designing the elements of the space, visitors will find an expansive and open interiors for them to walk through.
Late architect Zaha Hadid also designed the Beijing New Airport Terminal Building, the world’s largest terminal. This will be filled with civic gardens and will also include vertically separated passenger areas for domestic and international flights. This is opposed to the horizontally separated areas to create a more compact building and also to reduce travel times.
The Zaha Hadid Architecture website cites: “The overall symmetry of the airport terminal design, together with its flowing, interconnected forms, create a fluid composition which evokes the harmony and balance evidence in Chinese landscapes, while its colors and materials are an expression of visual language within traditional Chinese culture.”
The innovative design also features a new 700,000 square-meter terminal which will also include a central hub. It will include walkways that connect from one point to another to make navigation easier.
The first phase of the airport opening will include four runways while the two other phases will have additional areas that can push the airport’s capacity to 10 million passengers annually.
There is also a construction taking place on a high-speed railway station for the passengers to easily get to the airport.
The construction of the Beijing Daxing International Airport is a good team to make travel times easier as Beijing’s Capital International Airport is considered the second busiest airport in the world.
