(Manila, Philippines) – Several LGU’s and Schools in Luzon have suspended classes on Thursday, September 13 due to Typhoon Ompong (International Name -Mangkhut) that recently entered (PAR) Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Typhoon “MANGKHUT” has further intensified and it will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in the afternoon.

  • Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal #1 (TCWS#1)  may be raised over Eastern Luzon as early as tonight or tomorrow early morning (13 Sept.)
  • May traverse the Cagayan-Batanes area around Saturday (15  Sept.)
  • Heavy rains and strong winds possible over Northern Luzon and parts of Central and Southern Luzon.  Surrounding seas will be rough to very rough.
  • May enhance the “Habagat” which will bring occasional rains over Palawan, Mindoro Provinces, and Western Visayas by Friday and Saturday.
The public and the disaster risk reduction and management council concerned are advised to monitor for the next update on this weather disturbance to be incorporated in the Public Weather Forecast at 4 AM tomorrow and in the next advisory at 11 AM Tomorrow.

Department of Education (DepEd) Class Suspension Guideline:

  • DepEd Calls on parents to determine whether their children should go to school during typhoons, floods and other calamities in the absence of official announcements from DepEd.
  • In the absence of storm signal warnings, LGU are expected to announce whole day class cancellations not later than 4:30AM or half day class suspensions not later than 11:00AM.
  • Storm signal warning declared by PAGASA between 10:00pm and 4:30AM reflect the whole day cancellation of classes in appropriate levels in the affected areas.
  • Storm signal warnings declared by PAGASA by 11:00AM automatically suspend the same day’s afternoon classes in appropriate levels in the affected areas.

*Suspension of classes for the tertiary level (colleges and universities) will be at the discretion of school management.
