Spending a Night at Sabitang Laya Island in Caramoan Islands

Sabitang Laya Island in the Caramoan Islands

Camarines Sur, Philippines — The Caramoan Islands have always been my favorite getaway since 2016, when I first visited them with a group of friends.

There’s the hidden lake with the mythical two big milkfish on Matukad Island, the pristine Manlawi sandbar, the remote white-sand beach of Cotivas Island, and the rolling hills of Guinahoan Island, which remind me of Batanes, among others.

Among its seemingly paradise islands, Sabitang Laya Island is by far one of my favorites. As one of the locations for the reality TV show Survivor, Sabitang Laya Island undeniably exudes rawness, adventure, and fun. The Caramoan Islands have several islands suitable for camping. Aside from Matukad Island, which is one of the closest to mainland Caramoan in Brgy. Paniman, Lahos Island is also a good choice.

If you have the budget for accommodation, Gota Village on the mainland is a great choice. But if you are into budget travel and laid-back camping under the stars, I personally suggest Matukad or Sabitang Laya for that extra kick of adventure.

The island is usually the last stop after a day tour in Caramoan, given its remote location, so it is only fitting for campers to stay a night here for its secluded beaches, rock formations reminiscent of El Nido, and a vast beach camping site.

Sabitang Laya Island, a triangular island, is blessed with twin beaches; together, they stretch over two kilometers. This long stretch is a perfect come-on for a barefoot morning jog.

The beaches are separated by fortress-like rock formations that break that blue beach backdrop. From a distance, it serves as a welcome view for guests and a picturesque backdrop for group and solo shots (be careful, though, for those who dare to climb the rocks, as it can be tricky to step on their sharp edges).

A dip in its teal waters caps off an entire day of tiring island-hopping. Although there have been reports of deadly box jellyfish in Sabitang Laya Island during certain seasons, swimming (with precautions and guidance from licensed tour guides) can still be a fun and memorable experience.

Here are a few tips on camping at Sabitang Laya Island:

Get an authorized tour guide

We highly recommend booking island tours through authorized tour guides and operators who are trained to handle emergencies, such as box jellyfish stings. For more information on island-hopping tours, you may contact Naga Excursions.

Be informed

Know the box jellyfish season and take precautions if you are arriving during these seasons. A first-aid kit in the group should be a must. To know more about this deadly creature, read here.

Never leave trash

A traveler should always know this. This should be mandatory for all beachgoers and campers, especially on remote islands, where trash will inevitably end up in the ocean if left behind.

Camping on a remote island, especially one as pristine and raw as Sabitang Laya, is a mix of fun and responsibility. Enjoy the experience, but always be mindful of our actions.
