Resort Review: The Funny Lion in Coron Palawan

Where to Stay in Coron, Palawan: The Funny Lion Resort Review

Coron, a captivating town in Palawan, is rapidly gaining fame for its crystal-clear waters that shimmer under the tropical sun, revealing vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. The landscape features lush greenery and dramatic volcanic formations that add to its stunning scenery. Travelers can explore the underwater world through scuba diving excursions to see colorful coral gardens and diverse fish species.

The area also offers adventurous hikes through dense jungles leading to breathtaking viewpoints. Island-hopping tours take travelers to secluded beaches and lagoons, while special boat trips offer opportunities to observe gentle dugongs in their natural habitat. With so many activities—ranging from snorkeling and kayaking to relaxing on pristine sands—Coron promises an unforgettable experience for every traveler.

Plus, you get to visit spectacular places that will surely take your breath away! There’s Kayangan Lake, famous as “The Cleanest Lake in Asia”. If you’re up for taking a trip back in time, you can visit the Sunken Japanese Wreck, where you can witness war vessels used in the 2nd World War.

About The Funny Lion

Opened in 2014, the Funny Lion (check rates) is a boutique hotel located in Sitio Jolo, Coron, Palawan. It is one of the several highly rated hotels – Amorita Resort and Momo Beach House in Bohol and Santa Monica Beach Club in Dumaguete, to mention a few – managed by One-Of Collection.

The Funny Lion got its name from Calauit, a nearby safari park filled with wild animals imported from Africa during the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos. You can find a wide range of safari animals, except lions. Safari without a Lion? Hence, the name.

Unlike many hotel establishments that usually take with them their own distinct theme and style and root them in the place of their choice, The Funny Lion resonates with the unique culture, local people, and rich history of its surroundings to help you immerse yourself in a world different from your own.

How to Get There

The Funny Lion is only half an hour away from the Busuanga Airport. With prior reservations, you can arrange for private transportation that will take you from the Airport / Seaport to the hotel – airport transfers such as this are usually included in room rates.

Arrival Experience

The moment I set foot in the hotel, I immediately felt like I was on a safari. Everything about the place suggested adventure on the wild plains of Africa, but with a tropical island feel. There are statues of roaring lions, leather-upholstered furniture, and old globes paired with framed maps. Even the personnel were dressed in safari clothes!

Food

The hotel’s restaurant is named Hunt Restaurant, a very fitting name for a safari-themed place. They serve a mixture of Western and Filipino cuisine, which I really like. What I find most attractive is the way they presented their dishes. All look so appetizing! I loved it so much that I practically tried all my meals there. By the way, I truly enjoyed the breakfast buffet, which they serve with different dishes every day.

Resort Amenities

I was so happy that the services I needed were conveniently provided by the hotel. During my first stay almost two years ago, I needed assistance in having my clothes washed. Their staff contacted the nearest laundry service for me and made sure it would be delivered on time!

During my recent stay a few months ago, they also gave us a tour around Coron. Before booking, you can also choose the type of tours you would like to get instant savings. All tours are well organized and safely conducted by a trusted local tour company, Calamianes Expeditions & Eco-Tours.

The resort has a nice infinity pool overlooking the mangrove area. It’s interesting to know that they were able to build it without destroying a single part of the mangrove.

When I was exhausted from our adventures, I loved to go to the Pride Deck, which had two bubbly pools – one for adults and one for kiddies. It offered a very beautiful view of the bay, and they also offered cocktails of your choice.

My Room

During our recent trip with fellow bloggers, I stayed in a King Room, which meant I had a full-size bed all to myself and a beautiful veranda overlooking the pool and the bay.

The very moment I entered, I felt a sense of relief and comfort after a long, tiring day of exciting adventure. It has a modern, rustic design with accents of native fixtures to blend in with the place.

My favorite thing about my room is the walk-in shower with both hot and cold water. It even has an environmentally friendly lemongrass shampoo in a glass container together with a lemongrass soap, both of which smelled so refreshing!

To give you an idea of the rest of the rooms, here is the information I got:

There are a total of 32 spacious and chic rooms you can stay in – all of which can accommodate 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children at the same time. These rooms are divided into 3 types you can choose from:

1. Cub Room

The Cub room has 2 twin beds and a pull-out bed, suitable for friends and backpackers alike.

2. King Room

The King room features a king bed, perfect for couples on a romantic getaway. A small family will also have a great time in this 25 sqm room.

3. Pride Room (Premium Room)

The Pride room will provide you with the ultimate experience of style and comfort. It offers a King bed and a lanai or veranda that provide unlimited access to spectacular views of Coron Bay, the virgin mangrove, and the surrounding hills.

Overall Experience

My experience at The Funny Lion (book now) is something that I will remember for the rest of my life! It may not be one of those mega-hotels that are very extravagant and luxurious, but they provided such unparalleled personal service that I felt special.

They give me sweet things to munch on every night, and they even hand me some insect repellent lotions when I go out during the day. The customer service is excellent, the food is delicious, and the place is beautiful! I could not ask for anything better.
