Kimukatsu: Japan’s most famous Pork Cutlet

If there’s one thing that the majority of Filipinos will agree on, it’s that Japanese food can spark cravings that won’t quit until satisfied. I’ve been craving for Tonkatsu for weeks and as luck would have it, during a recent visit to Century City Mall, I saw Kimukatsu, a restaurant famous for its Mille-feuille style Tonkatsu.

In its home country of Japan, Kimukatsu is one of the most famous pork cutlet restaurants as it has stores all over Tokyo, Osaka, Sendai and many other locations. They take pride in serving excellent juicy 25-layered pork cutlets of high quality so I had high expectations going in.

Cabbage Salad

I knew I was in for a treat when they served me two variants of miso soup — a red strong flavored one and another which had a white and milky texture. Uncrushed black and white sesames were served as well that I used to sprinkle on the cabbage salad and tonkatsu.

Ebi Mayo

I tried two appetizers: the Ebi Mayo, which was a serving of plump shrimps drizzled with sweet Japanese mayo; and Tatsuta-age, a meal of crispy boneless marinated chicken. The latter was especially flavorful as the tatsuta-age emphasize the use of a shoyu-based marinade. Instead of wheat flour, Kimukatsu uses potato starch instead. This results in a very juicy and tender meal, with an especially substantial depth of flavor that I was pleasantly surprised to find.

For the main dish, I tried three of their best-tasting tonkatsu. There’s definitely a flavor for every type of foodie out there!

If you’re looking for mild flavor, you won’t find it here. This katsu is coated with high-quality black pepper and the heavy-hitting flavor is a feast for the senses.

Garlic Tonkatsu

For all the garlic lovers out there, you’re in for a treat. Each bite of this katsu gives you freshly minced garlic that you’re sure to savor.

Out of the three flavors, I enjoyed this the most. As you bite into this katsu, savory cheddar cheese oozes from the middle. It’s a definite must-try!

Koshihikari Rice

All main dishes entitle you to unlimited Koshihikari Rice, cabbage salad and a soup of your choice.

All in all, I walked away from Kimukatsu pretty satisfied. I was impressed with their signature pork cutlet as it was one of the better preparations I’ve had and the rest of their offerings didn’t disappoint as well.
