I first learned about this restaurant from Timmy Jayme – an Advertising / PR executive I met in a Singapore Airlines event in Mandarin Hotel last week. To be honest, the only thing I can remember from what he said was, it was an Asian restaurant that serves good Malaysian food located near The Mansion in Baguio City. I forgot most of the details like where is the location and the most important… the name of the restaurant.
Chef’s Home – The Taste of Asia
Thanks to Google, I finally found the name of the resto and their contact information. After buying Ube and Strawberry Jam as pasalubong for my friends, I decided to visit the restaurant for lunch. If you like to avoid the noisy and crowded Session Road and this restaurant is the perfect place for you.
What I love about traveling alone is having my own time and the chance of eating in a restaurant where I prefer to dine. Yeah there’s no one to argue with as to where and what to eat but I guess the downside of eating alone is you cant try more than two dishes for obvious reasons.
Crispy Tilapia in Mango Salad
More than just their most talked about menu, how they got here in Baguio City was totally an interesting story of its own. The restaurant used to be just a hole in the wall kopi tiam located in a Sari-Sari store in Outlook Drive. Last year, a frequent customer and a huge fan of their food constructed a nice and cozy one story building which was eventually offered to them for rent – this is where you can find them now in Lualhati Street corner Romulo Drive which is a stone throw away from the famous Mansion House.
Sago Gula Melaka
After looking at their menu, I learned that they are also offering Thai food and other popular Asian Dishes. Too Bad Char Kway Teow and Laksa are not available but I guess It only means I really have to try their other house specialties.
Chef’s Home Menu for the Day
For the main course, I ordered Crispy Tilapia in Mango Salad. I’m not a huge fan of Green Mango but after tasting the food, Im definitely now a convert. I love how their sliced and fried the Tilapia fillet, Its crispy but still soft and not too dry. The taste is truly explosive, I’m not sure what are the other ingredients but the only thing I can recognize in the plate are green mango, basil, lime, crushed crispy roasted peanuts, chili, tomatoes and cucumber.
Inside the Restaurant
I was supposed to order Murtabak but I decided to cancel it since I’m reserving a room for dessert. And finally for the sweets, I ordered Sago Gula Melaka. This dessert comprises of three parts, the sago pudding, coconut milk (santan) and Gula Melaka (palm sugar). I just order the small serving but their “small” is still good for sharing… The taste? Its really really really good.

Lovers in Baguio!
Chef Alvin & Gina Emuang decided to go to the Philippines in 2010 during the Bangkok Crisis. Alvin Emuang used to be a Resident Manager of Sofitel Sukhumvit Bangkok and Grand Mercure Sukhumvit 22. Due to low occupancy rate caused by political crisis in Bangkok that time, Chef Alvin was laid off together with other hotel executives.
While waiting for another job assignment, Chef Alvin and her Filipina wife Gina started a small restaurant last September 6, 2010. It all started in a humble looking place located right beside a Sari Sari store owned by Gina’s relatives.
Last June 1, 2012, they transferred to their newly built restaurant. Today, reserving a seat is a must if you really want to try out their food. The restaurant is open from 11AM to 2PM and 6PM to 8PM Mon-Sat and they are closed on Sundays.
