Museo del Galeón: A New Cultural Attraction Exploring the Philippines’ Maritime Heritage

SM Mall of Asia Complex is expanding its cultural and tourism offerings by adding Museo del Galeón, the Philippines’ first experiential maritime museum. The four-level attraction brings the country’s maritime history to life through immersive storytelling, interactive exhibits, live programming, and educational experiences.

At the heart of the museum is the story of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, which connected the Philippines and Mexico for more than two centuries and played an important role in the country’s history, culture, and global trade.

A Full-Scale Galleon Takes Center Stage

Museo del Galeón spans approximately 9,000 square meters across four levels. One of its major highlights is a full-scale replica of the 17th-century Galeón Espíritu Santo, constructed from fiberglass by Filipino artisans.

The ship provides a striking centerpiece for visitors exploring the museum. Its design and surrounding exhibits help illustrate the scale, technology, people, and stories behind the historic galleon trade.

Rather than presenting maritime history through traditional displays alone, the museum uses immersive elements and interactive experiences to make the subject accessible to students, families, tourists, corporate groups, and culture enthusiasts.

A Growing Cultural Destination at the MOA Complex

Since opening in May, Museo del Galeón has welcomed thousands of visitors and hosted a growing range of activities. These include private tours, workshops, talks, and after-hours experiences.

Its location within the SM Mall of Asia Complex also makes the museum accessible to a broad audience. Visitors can combine a cultural experience with shopping, dining, entertainment, and other attractions around the complex.

The museum’s programming continues to expand as it develops new ways to engage different audiences and encourage visitors to return.

Corporate Support for Philippine Maritime Heritage

Museo del Galeón has also attracted support from companies and private individuals interested in contributing to the preservation and promotion of Philippine maritime heritage.

One sponsorship opportunity allows companies and individuals to support permanent installations featuring 181 floating galleons. Each sponsored vessel carries the sponsor’s name, creating a visible connection between private-sector support and the museum’s cultural and educational mission.

According to Operations Director Chiqui Batac, the private sector can play a broader role in preserving Philippine heritage and introducing maritime history to wider audiences.

The museum also provides companies with opportunities to connect with clients and customers through cultural programs, storytelling, and shared experiences.

After-Hours Experiences Add a Modern Twist

Museo del Galeón is also developing programming that goes beyond daytime museum visits.

One recent after-hours event combined museum access with curated cocktails, a guided cocktail journey, and maritime trivia. The program was developed in partnership with several brands and offered guests a different way to experience the museum after regular visiting hours.

More after-hours programs are planned, alongside expert-led talks, youth workshops, and brand collaborations.

These activities reflect the museum’s goal of creating experiences that appeal to different interests while encouraging repeat visits.

Keeping the Museum Experience Fresh

Museo del Galeón plans to continuously develop its programming and introduce new activities for visitors.

“We want visitors to have new things to discover each time they come, while also creating different opportunities for the public to engage with the museum,” Batac said.

For travelers, families, students, and anyone interested in Philippine history, Museo del Galeón offers a new way to explore the country’s connection to the sea and the historic Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade.
