Travel Gadget Review: Momax Selfie Stable Smartphone Gimbal

Momax Selfie Stable Smartphone Gimbal Review

Straight up, the Momax Selfie Stable Gimbal is a relatively not-so-cheap accessory. It retails for P3,490, but you can get one at select Digital Walker stores for P2,490 for a promotional period. With this in mind, is this a device worth the bucks? After all, it’s just a selfie stick, but can it be really more than that?

Good selfie sticks, normally, are not the kind you buy off in sketchy stores selling replica hodgepodges. And if you’re particularly keen on taking quality videos (say, for a project or a vlog), which most of the time requires investing on other features like Bluetooth functionality or even the ability to convert into a tripod, one can argue that the Momax Selfie Stable is reasonably priced as it is.

The device can be used as a phone gimbal, a tripod, and a selfie stick.

At 230g (188mm in folded length and 580mm in maximum length), it is lightweight and compact enough to fit into small compartments or bags, making it easy to store and use for everyday activities.

The brushed matte finish and grey gold alloy accents give the device a sleek look, while the soft rubber clamp was designed to ensure that your phone doesn’t get unwanted scratches upon mounting.

It functions as a simple handheld grip and as a static tripod, with a base with anti-slippery rubbers that provide stability for movement and steady shots. To fix the phone position, twist the rotary locking knob in a clockwise direction. To loosen the knob, twist it in a counterclockwise position.

To turn it into a stabilizing gimbal, loosen the knob, then press and hold the button on the clamp. Once the device is turned on, it will immediately position your smartphone to portrait mode. Press the button once, and it will rotate the clamp 90-degrees counterclockwise for landscape mode.

The detachable shutter can range up to 10 meters at best, and you can charge it like you would any Android device. As per the gimbal, there’s a micro USB port on the clamp’s side. Charging time is estimated at about half to a full hour until full, and its maximum operating time should be about two hours. When the battery is low, the LED indicator light will flash in red.

Now, let’s talk about the device’s weaknesses. First would probably the flimsy feel to it, mostly because it’s made of plastic. Of course, there’s the extra bulk that comes with metal accessories so that can be a positive thing for the Momax Selfie Stable for some. The second would be that it wobbles whenever you set it up. The tripod base is stable enough to keep it from tilting but for clutz like me, that can be a potential downside.

How Much?

The Momax Selfie Stable Smartphone Gimbal has a Suggested Retail Price of PHP3,490 and is available at select Digital Walker stores nationwide.

Overall Review

Overall, it is a good accessory to have for vlogging or if you just simply want to have good stable shots, more so if you have smartphones with advanced image stabilization features.
