Murtabak in Kota Bahru
Upon arrival in Kota Bahru, we immediately searched for a place to stay in the city center. Walking around the clock tower, we found one of the most affordable hotels in Kota Bahru, The Harmoni Hotel.

After leaving our things in the hotel room, we went outside to look for something to eat, and we were so thankful to find a restaurant beside our hotel. While browsing an unfamiliar food list in Nilam Restoran, we saw a guy busy making Murtabak – a popular food in Kelantan.

What is Murtabak?
Murtabak is a popular dish in several Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Often enjoyed as street food or in local restaurants, murtabak is a mouthwatering stuffed pancake that offers a delightful combination of flavors and textures.
Murtabak can be enjoyed hot off the griddle as a main dish or snack. It is often served with a side of pickles or a tangy dipping sauce, adding flavor to the already delicious pancake. Combining the crispy outer layer with the juicy and flavorful filling makes murtabak a delightful and satisfying treat.
Whether you try the savory meat-filled version or a vegetarian alternative, murtabak is a must-try dish for those seeking a taste of Southeast Asian cuisine. With its rich history and unique blend of flavors, murtabak truly stands out as a delicious and popular culinary delight.

Depending on the location, the type and ingredients can vary significantly. Kelantan’s bread is filled with curry-flavored beef and some spices.
My Murtabak fix will not be complete without ordering Teh Ice or Teh Tarik. I guess I found my new comfort food in Kota Bahru, and now my problem is where to find one in Manila…
