Yuletide Season in Ocean Park Hong Kong

Every year, I go home to celebrate Christmas with my family. Although we celebrate it the same way each year, the spirit of it never dies, no matter where we celebrate it or who the people are. Such is very much true for myself. Christmas is a tradition that goes beyond time and geographical space.

This year, I was invited to visit Ocean Park Hong Kong to experience the new offerings of the theme park for this years Christmas Season. The park, which has been bringing joy to people from all over the world for 40 years now, surely did a great job in getting me dancing along to Christmas songs, singing because of Last Song Syndrome to the rhythm, and breathing into the holiday season in full steam ahead.

Entering the gates of the 91.5-hectare theme park was like entering another world. There was so much lights, festivity, and happiness in the air. They were really geared up for December. Unlike average parks, this one magnificently utilizes advancements in technology to start the season right.

This is especially evident in their new Mine Train, a rollercoaster that is made better with Samsung Gear VR. The added virtual reality to the classical rollercoaster ride was amazing enough to make a full-grown man such as myself beg for a second round.

Imagine the adrenaline rush you feel in the typical, 70-plus kilometers per hour of a rollercoaster ride, but add in the hyper-realistic 360-degree view of an Amazon forest, and you get a sensational and truly unforgettable ride. The rollercoaster-VR mash up is a groundbreaking one. It’s the first and only VR rollercoaster ride in Hong Kong.

Other sights in the park that were perked with VR technology is the VR Arcade, which includes Mission Impossible-esque shooting, biking, and doing some mid-air acrobatics like an international spy. Nearby is the VR Challenges Zone where guests can go boxing like Manny Pacquiao. A bit further is the VR Forest Adventure in Thrill Mountain, a VR cinema.

After our adrenaline-pumping adventure in the various VR-areas in the park, we waited for nightfall for the Ocean Park x Pinkoi Festive Marketplace to open. The bazaar was loaded with some very aesthetic souvenirs that ranged from original illustrations to fashion accessories and to tie-dye collectibles. We then proceeded with the early evening in the park by strolling under the park’s 40-foot tall Christmas tree, whose star shone brighter than the ones in the sky.

The artificial snow set the mood up for the other major Christmas Sensation attractions, Santa’s Cottage and Garden of Romance. And, contrary to how it sounds, I found the Garden of Romance very enjoyable!

In overall, we had an amazing day. The enthusiasm I got from exploring the different Christmas-themed parts of the park is more than enough to last until the New Year. I’m happy I decided to start my month right in Ocean Park Hong Kong.

Ocean Park Hong Kong (official website) first opened its gates to the public in January 1977. It has been an award-winning attraction that advocates wildlife and environmental attraction with its central theme.

It is the first theme park in Asia to win an award and be recognized by the International Association of Amusements Parks and Attractions (IAAPA).

This year’s park-wide Christmas celebration started on December 11, 2017, and will end on January 1, 2018.
