A Moving Opening with Enjoy Your Stay
Launching the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is Enjoy Your Stay, a poignant drama directed by Dominik Locher and Honee Alipio and co-produced by Close Up Films and JBA Production.
The film follows Luz, a Filipina who has spent years living in Switzerland as an undocumented cleaner. Together with fellow migrant workers, including her close friend Aileen, she survives in constant fear of being discovered and deported while sacrificing everything to provide a better future for her family back home.
Luz’s world is turned upside down when she unexpectedly sees her former husband and their six-year-old daughter appear on a Filipino reality television program. Overwhelmed by guilt and longing, she publicly promises to return home in time for her daughter’s birthday. But with mounting debts and limited savings, fulfilling that promise becomes increasingly difficult.
As the clock ticks, Luz is forced to make painful decisions that challenge both her morals and her loyalty to the migrant community she has relied on for survival. The film presents a deeply emotional portrait of the difficult choices many overseas Filipino workers face while pursuing better opportunities abroad.
Leading the cast is acclaimed actress Mercedes Cabral, joined by an impressive ensemble that includes Anna Luna, Hasmine Killip, Irma Adlawan, Donna Cariaga, and Madeleine Nicolas.
Enjoy Your Stay premiered internationally in the Panorama section of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival on February 14, 2026, earning recognition for its honest portrayal of migration, motherhood, and sacrifice.
Festivalgoers can catch the opening film free of charge on August 6, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. at Red Carpet Cinemas 1 and 2 in Shangri-La Plaza.
Closing the Festival with Filipiñana
Bringing Cinemalaya 22 to a powerful conclusion is Filipiñana, the latest feature from director Rafael Manuel.
Expanding on his acclaimed 2020 short film of the same name, Filipiñana centers on Isabel, portrayed by Jorrybell Agoto, a teenage employee working at an exclusive country club. Fascinated by the club’s influential president, Dr. Palanca, played by Teroy Guzman, Isabel slowly discovers that beneath the polished image of wealth and prestige lies a disturbing history of violence and abuse.
What begins as youthful admiration gradually transforms into a haunting journey of uncovering long-buried truths, forcing Isabel to confront a reality far darker than she ever imagined.
The film made its world premiere in the prestigious World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, further cementing the growing global recognition of contemporary Filipino independent cinema.
Filipiñana will serve as the festival’s closing film on August 16, 2026, at 8:30 p.m. at Red Carpet Cinemas 1 and 2, Shangri-La Plaza. Tickets are priced at PHP 350 for regular admission and PHP 250 for students.

Admission to the opening and closing screenings will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis beginning two hours before each screening.
