(Manila, Philippines) – Several LGU’s and Schools in the Philippines have suspended classes on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, due to the inclement weather brought by Tropical Depression Falcon (Danas).

Typhoon Update by PAGASA Issued at 11:00 PM, 16, July 2019

Tropical Storm”Falcon”

“FALCON” HAS MAINTAINED ITS STRENGTH AS IT CONTINUES TO MOVE CLOSER TOWARDS NORTHERN LUZON.

  • Between today and tomorrow evening, moderate to heavy rains will be experienced over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Zambales, Occidental Mindoro, northern Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, and Guimaras. Meanwhile, light to moderate with at times heavy rains will be experienced over Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Bicol Region, and the rest of Visayas, Central Luzon, and MIMAROPA.
  • Between tomorrow evening and Thursday (July 18) evening, moderate to heavy rains may prevail over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Cagayan Valley. Meanwhile, light to moderate with at times heavy rains may prevail over the Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and MIMAROPA.
  • Residents in the aforementioned areas, especially those living in areas identified to be at risk of flooding and landslides, are advised to take precautionary measures, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and continue monitoring for updates, especially the Thunderstorm Advisories and Heavy Rainfall Warnings to be issued by PAGASA Regional Services Divisions.
  • Sea travel is risky over the seaboards of areas under TCWS, the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon, the seaboard of Southern Luzon, and the eastern and western seaboards of Visayas.
  • This weather disturbance is expected to closely approach or make landfall over Babuyan-Batanes area tomorrow afternoon or evening and may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Friday (19 July) morning.

At 10:00 PM today, the center of Tropical Storm “FALCON” was estimated based on all available data at 195 km East Southeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (17.1 °N, 123.5 °E )

Department of Education (DepEd) Class Suspension Guideline:

  • DepEd Calls on parents to determine whether their children should go to school during typhoons, floods and other calamities in the absence of official announcements from DepEd.
  • In the absence of storm signal warnings, LGU are expected to announce whole day class cancellations not later than 4:30AM or half day class suspensions not later than 11:00AM.
  • Storm signal warning declared by PAGASA between 10:00pm and 4:30AM reflect the whole day cancellation of classes in appropriate levels in the affected areas.
  • Storm signal warnings declared by PAGASA by 11:00AM automatically suspend the same day’s afternoon classes in appropriate levels in the affected areas.

*Suspension of classes for the tertiary level (colleges and universities) will be at the discretion of school management.
