Our last day of touring KL was a bit rainy. However, the overcast weather didn’t dampen our mood, and it seemed that the weather wanted us to enjoy our last activity. It was a Bak Kut Teh dinner at Restoran Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh in Jalan Imbi.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were fortunate to try their famous Bak Kut Teh. The popular restaurant is known among locals and tourists in search of their large servings of Bak Kut Teh and their variations. Apart from Bak Kut Teh, we also sampled their signature dry variation of the Bak Kut Teh, their friend squid rings, omelet, sweet and sour fish, fish balls, and sauteed cabbage.

About Restoran Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh

Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh is a renowned Chinese restaurant in Jalan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur. It was founded in 1971 and has established a reputation for serving its local and international customers. Since its founding, Low Kok Cheng, the founder of Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh, has preserved his recipes which continue to please a long time and new customers. Some of their most popular dishes include the Yao Cha Guai, Kangkung Belacan, and Bak Kut Teh. The restaurant is often packed with locals and tourists, so try to avoid the crowd and visit early to get a taste of their famous Bak Kut Teh.

Luckily, it was not crowded when we arrived. We were able to secure a seat in the air-conditioned room. Good thing our food was pre-ordered, and we don’t have to wait for our food just like the rest of the walk-in customers. Overall, the food is good, and their Bak Kut Teh was almost on par with my favorite Bak Kut Teh served in the Klang District of Selangor.

What is Bak Kut Teh

Bak Kut Teh is a pork-rib soup often consumed for breakfast or Lunch. Although it is a pork-rib soup, its name translates to “meat bone tea.” Despite its name, Bak Kut Teh does not contain tea; the dish is mainly served with hot rice and hot tea, hence the name.

Bak Kut Teh is said to have originated from the province of Fujian in China around the 1930s. Its recipe eventually migrated to China’s neighboring countries, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. The dish became popular in the 1950s to 1970s because of its inexpensive yet nourishing ingredients, an excellent meal to start anyone’s day.

Simple Bak Kut Teh Recipe

A simple Bak Kut Teh can take 1.5 hours to cook, depending on the number of servings you will cook. Below is a simple Bak Kut Teh that can serve two people.


  • 8 cups of water
  • 6 teaspoons of dark soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of ground white pepper
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
  • 3 whole star anise
  • 2 whole garlic / 20 garlic cloves
  • 2 pounds of pork ribs (cut into pieces)
  • Cooked rice (for serving)

Instructions for Cooking

  1. Pour all the ingredients into a large pot, except the pork ribs, and bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Once boiling, add the pork ribs and bring them back to a boil.
  3. Lower the heat and let the dish simmer on low heat for an hour or until the meat is tender.
  4. Turn off the fire and cover the dish for 10 minutes.
  5. Serve with cooked rice and enjoy.

In the past few years, Bak Kut Teh has been cooked and served in varieties. Some individuals like to add mushrooms and tofu, other regions prefer a dry Bak Kut Teh, while others choose a thicker base with chilies. There have been seafood, halal versions, and even French variations of pork-rib soup. Despite not knowing its concrete origins, Bak Kut Teh is a favored and nostalgic meal that the elders will remember and the younger generation will love.
