Manggahan Festival 2014 in Guimaras Schedule of Activities

Officially slated on April 20 to 27, the Manggahan sa Guimaras Festival started in May 22, 1993 to commemorate the first anniversary of Guimaras as a full-pledged province and to promote the island-province’s distinction as a producer of top quality mangoes considered the best tasting in the world.

One of the festival highlights this year is the Mango All You Can Eat, an island bike race, and the Mutya ng Guimaras Beauty Pageant.

The island-province’s five towns, namely Jordan, Buenavista, San Lorenzo, Nueva Valencia and Sibunag will be showcasing their diverse cultures to foreign and local tourists.

Guimaras is well known for its Mangoes. Around 50,000 Guimaras Mango variety trees are planted in the island. Guimaras Island has 8,000 hectares of mango orchards managed by private companies and individual growers. The Island of Guimaras is known worldwide for producing some of the sweetest mangoes in the world. The Guimaras mango variety are also best for making dried mangoes, jam and other mango based delicacies.

About Guimaras Island

Guimaras is a fourth class island province located in the Western Visayas region in the Philippines. It is among the smallest provinces and its capital is Jordan. The island is located in the Panay Gulf, between the islands of Panay and Negros. To the northwest is the province of Iloilo and to the southeast is Negros Occidental.

The province consists primarily of Guimaras Island, and also includes Inampulugan, Guiwanon (or Guiuanon), Panobolon, Natunga, Nadulao, and many minor surrounding islands. Guimaras, formerly known as Himal-us, was a sub-province of Iloilo until it was made an independent province on May 22, 1992.

The fastest way to reach the island province is by means of a 10-15 minutes pump-boat ride from Iloilo City.
