Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur City Centre Review

Want to be welcomed to Kuala Lumpur in style and experience one of the five star hotels in Kuala Lumpur? Then stay at the Hotel Istana near Bukit Bintang – a perfect accommodation with a perfect location. The hotel is not brand new, and some might say it’s a bit scuffed around the edges, but it is definitely worth the stay.

The biggest downside is that the WiFi is only available in the lobby but if you have a laptop, you can access internet with their LAN cables. For me, that is almost a non-starter. But they are conducting upgrades and the hope is that before long they’ll have WiFi throughout the hotel because not everyone carries a laptop whenever they travel. The friendly and welcoming staffs of the Hotel Istana is exeptional and the views of the modern city are stunning. Plus I have a few tips for how to best enjoy your stay the Istana Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

Location in Kuala Lumpur City Centre

If this is your first trip to Kuala Lumpur City, you’ll be thrilled to stay at the Hotel Istana. It’s located right in the centre. Shopping at Bukit Bintang is within walking distance as well as the Sung Wei Plaza Shopping Centre, Pavilion Shopping Centre, and Times Square Shopping Centre. There are also walkways that can easily lead you to the Petronas Twin Towers.

If you enjoy walking and exploring, this is the spot to do it from. Plus there are also public transport options close by. You may never need to take a taxi at all to get to the places you want to go, although I did see people taking taxis back to their hotels after shopping.

Breakfast is fantastic. No complaints here and if you read other reviews of the Hotel Istana, you’ll find that time and again people talk about how great the food was. Just watch your plate because everyone is ready to clear it quickly. Good service is one thing, but that was probably a bit too quick for me.

Room Choices

Where you decide to stay in the Hotel Istana may make a difference for your enjoyment of the hotel. For example, if you stay on the side of the hotel that faces Raja Chulan Street. The street noise is audible and if you’re not in the city to enjoy the hustle and bustle, you may be bothered by the sound.

You can always try for the higher floors, but your best bet is to ask for a view of the Petronas Twin Towers. You’re in Kuala Lumpur City, right? Might as well get the room with the outstanding view of the Petronas Twin Towers. Plus, it’s well worth the money to get a Club Room. Be warned that the higher floors experience wait times for the elevators – you may have to plan for that.

The rooms in general are large and spacious. Deluxe rooms are especially huge and can accommodate spare beds for children. But be warned, if the hotel is busy and you don’t request a recently renovated room, you may experience problems. I spoke to some guests who were furious because their room was not as they had requested, including the fact that they didn’t have a king sized bed even though that was what they wanted. This seems like the most common complaint, and I even spoke to a single guy who said his shower didn’t work the whole stay.

The Bottom Line

It seems that although my experience in the Hotel Istana was excellent, there were quite a few complaints from people about things that you could say ruined their impression of the hotel. But the majority of the complaints were about the poor quality of the rooms. As the hotel is being upgraded, it will only get better.
