German, British festivals in Manila for February weekends

February celebrations do not end at Chinese New Year on Thursday (February 19), as the Manila will experience tastes of European countries like Germany and United Kingdom in the remaining weekends of the month.

Welcome German culture on February 21 to 22 during the annual Mabuhay Germany at the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) organized by German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI) in cooperation with the German Embassy, Goethe Institut and the German European School Manila.

Now on its seventh year, Mabuhay Germany celebrates over 60 years of diplomatic ties between the Philippines and Germany.

The two-day celebration will kick-off at 11 a.m. on Saturday with a Champagne Brunch and a marching band depicting German Karneval.

This will be followed by a back-to-back fora “Tara na sa Germany — Learn German and Work in Germany!” forum from 1-3 p.m. and Dual Training forum from 3-4 p.m.

A fun and groovy Saturday night is a thing to look forward in this festival with the musical performance of German synth-pop duo DYKO from 5-6 p.m. and a Groovy Doovy German Night from 7 p.m. until midnight.

The second day of the event will be activities for German community here including “Run for Schools” 3K, 5K, and 10K fun-run, Frühschoppen or the German tradition of sharing alcoholic drink before noon, German Chamber Bingo, Connect-o-lympics, 5th GPCCI Table Soccer Cup, and exhibitors get-together.

“More than a business and lifestyle exhibit, Mabuhay Germany is a celebration of six decades of friendship between Germany and the Philippines. Our strong presence in this country, represented by established companies in different industries, symbolizes our unwavering commitment to support Filipinos through commerce and culture,” GPCCI General Manager Nadine Fund said.

Meanwhile, for the last weekend of February until start of March, the British Embassy in Manila will hold its second Great British Festival at Bonifacio High Street, BGC also.

The Great British Festival will open evening of February 27 (Friday) with a ribbon cutting ceremony to be led by British Ambassador Asif Ahmad.

Over 50 companies with British links will participate the festival.

On its first day, booths are open from 2-7 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on February 28 and March 1.

Activities and booths in the three-day Great British Festival include:

*Cities of the Future — features replicas of sustainable design Arup, Shell, Hyder, JCB, ITP Consulting, NATS, Proinso, STI;

*Food and Drink Festival — features classic British food and drink like fish & chips, beer and whisky for sale by M&S, Twinings, Whyte & Mackay, Union Jack Tavern, Wolf & Fox, Howzat, Chuck’s Grub, Waitrose, Diageo and Yummy Organics

*Fashion Show — features top British brands in the Philippines including Cath Kidston, Mothercare, TM Lewin, Pepe Jeans London, Warehouse, River Island, Burton, Hackett, Savile Row, F&F, Superdry, Scott and Lyle, Joseph, M&S, Debenhams, Lee Cooper

*Retail Avenue — British brands selling their latest wares including Lush, Dune, Hamleys, Early Learning Centre

*Autoshow — with display by MINI, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Morgan

*UK Visa Information Booth — visa officers will be available to answer questions about the visa application process.
