Choosing the Right Marathon Shoes: Fit, Comfort and Course Should Come First

How to Choose the Best Marathon Shoes for Your Running Style and Race Course

Preparing for a marathon takes months of training, from building mileage and improving pace to completing long runs. But as race day gets closer, runners face another important decision: choosing the shoes that will carry them through 42.2 kilometers.

How to Choose the Best Marathon Shoes

How to Choose the Best Marathon Shoes

With countless race-day shoes available, making the right choice can feel overwhelming. Weight, cushioning, responsiveness, and technology all matter, but the most important factors are more personal. A marathon shoe needs to fit properly, feel comfortable over long distances, and suit both your running style and the course.

Start With the Fit

For Coach Dan Hilaria, Run Captain and lead strength-and-conditioning coach for the HOKA Run Club Philippines, choosing a marathon shoe starts with one basic consideration: fit.

“Fit first, then function,” says Coach Dan. “A marathon shoe can be fast, light, and highly cushioned, but if it doesn’t fit your foot properly, it’s probably not the right race-day shoe.”

A proper fit can help runners stay comfortable and maintain a consistent stride throughout the race. Once the fit is right, runners can consider other factors such as cushioning, weight, responsiveness, and stability.

Your expected race pace can also influence your choice. Runners targeting faster times may prefer lightweight and responsive shoes, while those expecting to spend several hours on the course may prioritize cushioning and comfort.

Pay Attention to How the Shoe Feels

Runners often spend considerable time thinking about their footstrike, including whether they land primarily on their heel, midfoot, or forefoot. Coach Dan suggests putting more emphasis on how the shoe actually feels during a run.

“How the shoe feels when you run is more important,” he says.

This becomes especially relevant during marathon training, when runners can test how a shoe performs at different speeds and distances. A shoe that feels comfortable during a short run may feel very different after 20 or 30 kilometers.

Consider the Marathon Course

The course should also influence your race-day shoe choice.

A flat and relatively straight marathon can place different demands on your footwear compared with a course featuring hills, frequent turns or uneven sections. Stability and grip can become more important when the route includes these challenges.

“You want a shoe that matches the demands of the course, not just one that looks fast,” Coach Dan says.

Before choosing a race-day shoe, consider the terrain, elevation profile, expected weather, and the type of surfaces you will encounter.

Comfort Matters More as You Get Tired

A marathon shoe needs to perform throughout the entire race, not only during the opening kilometers.

As fatigue sets in, your running form and stride can change. This makes comfort and stability increasingly important during the later stages of the marathon.

“Rule of thumb is this: You don’t just want a shoe that feels fast; you want one that still feels good when you’re tired,” says Coach Dan.

This is one reason why runners should avoid choosing a marathon shoe based solely on its weight or speed. A shoe that feels impressive during a short test run may not necessarily be the best option for several hours on the road.

Test Your Race-Day Shoes Before the Marathon

Breaking in and testing your race-day shoes should form part of your marathon preparation.

Coach Dan recommends using the shoes across different types of training sessions, including an easy run, a faster or race-pace workout and a long run. This gives runners a better idea of how the shoes respond under different conditions.

He personally aims to put around 15 to 25 kilometers into a pair before race day. This allows him to become familiar with the shoe and identify any potential comfort or fit issues before the marathon.

For runners, this testing period can also help determine whether the shoe works with their socks, running form, and preferred pace.

HOKA Marathon Pack Offers Two Race-Day Options

HOKA’s Marathon Pack includes two road-racing shoes that take different approaches to marathon performance: the Cielo X1 3.0 and Rocket X 3.

The Cielo X1 3.0 features an aggressive rocker geometry and dual-layer PEBA foam, designed to deliver an energetic, responsive ride. Its construction is aimed at runners looking for a pronounced rolling sensation and a lively feel during the race.

The Rocket X 3, meanwhile, features a wider dual-density PEBA base and a carbon plate with stabilizing winglets. This creates a more supportive platform while maintaining the characteristics expected from a carbon-plated racing shoe.

The two models offer runners different options depending on how they prefer their shoes to feel and which characteristics they value in a marathon.

How Much Do the HOKA Marathon Pack Shoes Cost in the Philippines?

The HOKA Marathon Pack is available at HOKA stores, on HOKA.com, and at Runnr in the Philippines.

Current local prices listed for the collection are:

Selected apparel from the collection is also available locally.

Choosing Your Marathon Shoe

There is no single marathon shoe that works for every runner. The best starting point is finding a model that fits your foot properly and remains comfortable throughout your training runs.

From there, consider your running pace, preferred ride, the course profile, and how the shoe feels when fatigue sets in. Testing the shoes during easy runs, faster workouts, and long runs can also give you a clearer picture of how they will perform on race day.

Whether you prefer the energetic feel of the Cielo X1 3.0 or the more supportive platform of the Rocket X 3, the same principle applies: your marathon shoes should work with your feet, your running style, and the course you plan to conquer.
