AirAsia strengthens Davao as gateway city with direct flights to Kuala Lumpur from Php99
Traveling between peninsular Malaysia and the southern Philippines is easier than ever now that AirAsia has announced that it will be offering direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Davao City.
The new partnership was announced in a media conference held in Davao City. In attendance were PH trade secretary Ramon Lopez, AirAsia Philippines investor Alfredo Yao, AirAsia Philippines CEO Captain Dexter Comendador, AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes and Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
Fernandes points to his company’s previous experience with Davao as a reason for the expansion. Not only was Davao one of the first destinations AirAsia had when it started its operations here in the Philippines, it was also a source of pride for the company as they pioneered the Clark-Davao routes then.

“Davao has a special place in my heart,” he said.
AirAsia Philippines already has flights from Davao to other Philippine destinations like Boracay, Clark, Palawan, Cebu and Manila.
Duterte-Carpio, the daughter of the current Philippine president, for her part, praised the decision of the Malaysian company to set up shop in her city. She says it will “empower” local businesses and firms to step up their game to compete internationally now that it will have more exposure to international tourists and consumers. The move will also solidify Davao as Mindanao’s main financial, tourism and cultural hub.
This development is also in line with expectations that was set when her father, a former Davao City mayor himself, ascended to the presidency. Promising development outside Metro Manila especially in the southern Philippines, AirAsia will be boosting the potential of Davao’s products and services given the many opportunities presented by the ASEAN. The flight will enable better connectivity and accessibility between the two ASEAN cities without the passengers suffering because of exorbitant prices.
