Resort Review: Why Plantation Bay Mactan Is Not For Everyone
Want to stay at one of the most distinctive resorts in the world? Then Plantation Bay Resort and Spa (resort info) just might be the one for you, or not.
When I received the reservation confirmation via email from Plantation Bay Resort and Spa, I read that they had a room guarantee.
“Just Don’t Like It” Guarantee.
If within four hours upon your arrival you come to realize that the resort is just not for you, you can inform the management, and they will cancel any room charge for that day, refund any unused advance payment, and give you free transportation to another hotel in metropolitan Cebu.
And I was like, “Really? That’s amazing customer service. Is there another resort in the world that offers this same guarantee?”
This just goes to show how confident Plantation Bay (resort reviews) is with their offerings. But what I failed to ask was, “Has anyone took advantage of this money-back guarantee yet?”
You Just Can’t Please Everyone.
After spending two nights at this resort, the only thing that bothered me was this, “Who in their right mind would say no to this beautiful place?”
As they say, you just can’t please everybody. There’s going to be at least one in seven billion people who’ll bluntly say no even when offered the experience of a lifetime.
Plantation Bay Is Not For You If…
Well, I guess it’s safe to say that Plantation Bay Mactan is not for everyone, most especially if:
1. Theme park inspired resorts just bore you to death
You’ll be handed a map for you to explore every nook and cranny at your own pace.
You could choose to walk, ride tandem bikes, rent a segway scooter, hail a horse carriage on weekends, or ride the 24-hour electric carts to get to your desired point on the map.
I don’t know about you, but the kid’s wild imagination in me actually lit up upon receiving this ‘treasure map’ during the check in process.
And boy, oh boy, was I not disappointed. There are indeed several instagrammable spots with breath-taking views if you just know where to look, and oh, bring your camera at all times.
2. Gastronomic creations won’t excite your taste buds
You can choose from four diverse restaurants within the resort:
Fiji, with a panoramic view of Galapagos Beach, is known for its Japanese offerings.
Here, we were able to try their Salmon Sashimi Sunrise, Baja Boat, and their gigantic Prawn Tempura. These dishes tasted as good as they were presented and were best paired with their signature cocktail.
Savannah Grill and Lounge, on the other hand, claims to have the best burger on earth.
Since the restaurant was undergoing renovation, we never lost hope and decided to call in-room service for their Powerhouse Burger. Guess what? It was so good that it made me smile from ear to ear.
Palermo Café and Bar boasts of their tapas and pasta: Gambas, Deviled Eggs, Jamon Bellota, Spaghettini al Nero, and the best steak I’ve had in my entire twenty-seven years of existence, the Kagoshima Wagyu Sirloin. This is by far my favorite gastronomic moment at Plantation Bay.
And last but not least, Kilimanjaro Kafe is the go-to restaurant if you want a great view of the lagoon. This is where breakfast is served and is also the only restaurant that never closes up shop.
If you’re looking for some nightlife, on top of Kilimanjaro is Alien Abduction, where you could listen to live music while eating your favorite Lunar Eclipse ice cream.
You could also try Galapagos Bar’s Sex on the Beach cocktail while listening to jazz hits by the beach.
The resort also hosts themed dinners at Orion Beach during high occupancy. I was able to witness their Viva España on-stage production while enjoying a good selection of Spanish dishes.
3. You couldn’t care less about Filipino hospitality
Smiles are indeed contagious. I noticed this from every staff I came across while exploring every inch of the resort.
There might be a dark cloud hovering above your head because of problems at home or at work, but seeing friendly strangers greet you just leaves off an assurance that everything’s going to be alright.
The staff at Plantation Bay also goes the extra mile when it comes to your convenience. To cite an example, they have multi-lingual front desk staff to entertain non-English speaking guests, and restaurant menus are written in other languages.
One personal experience was when I called Kilimanjaro Kafe directly and ordered my breakfast to be delivered straight to my veranda. Instead of rejecting my order, forwarding my call to room service, and repeating the process again, the guy on the other end of the line took the initiative of informing room service of my transaction. At the same time, I continued sipping my cup of coffee and getting some work done.
4. Healing massages and soothing treatments won’t impress you
Experiencing a full body massage at Mogambo Springs made me understand why there was the word ‘spa’ in the name Plantation Bay Resort and Spa.
Immediately upon entering, you’ll be transported to an ancient Japanese village with a Zen-like atmosphere that will surely take your stress away.
To fully prepare yourself for a night of relaxation, you’ll have to immerse your whole body in four different types of springs, which typically end with you sweating all those toxins out in a sauna.
You will then be led to a private villa of your choice where you’ll be pampered with utmost care and comfort. Be on the lookout as I’ll be writing a separate article on Mogambo Springs.
5. Staying in your room all-day pleases you
Why not? My lagoon view room on the second floor of Edo Hall is more than sufficient for a lazy day with its picture-perfect veranda, complete room amenities, and a marble bathtub. However, that’s not how you spend your days at Plantation Bay.
There’s plenty of fun things to do: Pedal Boarding, Firing Range, Wall Climbing, Pitch and Putt, Archery, Table Tennis, Billiards, Foosball, Video Games and Swimming, obviously.
Guess what? That’s only a quarter of the available sports and recreation facilities provided for the resort’s guests. These activities definitely made every second of our stay truly unforgettable.
After reading this article, you’ll definitely agree with me that Plantation Bay Mactan is not for everyone.
But for someone who experienced everything first hand from the delectable offerings to the remarkable hospitality up to the part where I had every bit of fun under the sun, it’s just undeniable;
Plantation Bay Mactan truly is comparable to none.
