Where to Stay in Penang: Sunway Hotel Georgetown

Sunway Hotel Georgetown Review: An Astounding Hotel in the Heart of Penang

After four hours of flight from Manila to Kuala Lumpur and almost six hours of layover in KL, we finally arrived at Penang International Airport. Our tour guide welcomed us at the airport and brought us to Sunway Hotel Georgetown (check rates), our official home in Penang.

Arrival

It was already 10 p.m. when we arrived at the airport, but as we got closer to our hotel, we immediately observed the vibrant food scene in the city. In fact, I think I saw the best McDonald’s building yet – that was the one located near our hotel. McDonald’s Birch House is a heritage building built around 1908 to serve as the late 20th-century tin smelting plant’s office. From the moment we stepped into the hotel, I knew we were in for a gastronomic journey.

After getting our bags in the bus compartment, we headed to the hotel lobby. With its impressive design, well-lit, and high-ceiling lobby, I knew I would love the place. Coming from a long flight, I appreciated that the staff prepared our key cards before our arrival. We were heading to our respective deluxe club rooms in less than five minutes. After leaving our bags, some of us decided to eat at McDonald’s. It was almost midnight when we left the fastfood chain, summing up our first night in Penang.

Our Penang Bloggers Familiarization tour was a joint project of Philippines AirAsia and Penang Global Tourism.

About Sunway Hotel Georgetown

The Sunway Hotel Georgetown (hotel info), Penang, is nestled amidst Georgetown’s vibrant city life and heritage charms. Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, its 250 hotel rooms and suites offer the perfect place to start and end your day.

Location

The hotel is seated in the heart of Penang amidst the vibrant city of Georgetown –billed as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. The Sunway Hotel Georgetown (customer reviews) sits in the center of Georgetown. It is surrounded by pastry shops by day and New Lane food stalls serving famous hawker delights by night. A three-minute walk from the shops of Penang Times Square, this sophisticated hotel in the city hub is also an eight-minute walk from the Komtar complex and 3 kilometers from Fort Cornwallis.

The Rooms

I stayed at a Deluxe Club Room and found it spacious. To give you an idea, a standard deluxe room measures 28 square meters, and suite rooms are 56 square meters. What I like about my room is it’s located on a higher floor, ensuring that I won’t hear the noisy streets at night. Also, being on a higher floor ensures great cityscape views from my clear glass window.

Since we are all staying in a Club Room, we have exclusive access to the Club Lounge – a chic contemporary-style private lounge that serves as an ideal rendezvous for casual chill-out sessions and business meetings.

Modern rooms sport free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, safes, work desks, and tea and coffee making facilities.

Although there’s no bathtub (which I rarely use), my room has a roomy en-suite with a glass-enclosed shower.

There’s a casual, all-day restaurant and a 24-hour gym, plus a rooftop pool with skyline views. Parking is complimentary.

Food

Our access to the Club Lounge keeps us from the crowd during breakfast. We enjoyed mid-day refreshments, nightly cocktails, and canapes in the evening for maximum relaxation. Club Lounge Breakfast is available from 6:30 a.m. through 11:00 a.m., while evening snacks and beverages (yes, including alcoholic beverages) are available from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. They serve afternoon tea services from 12:00 nn to 6:00 p.m. daily.

With dedicated Club floor ambassadors, guests staying at Club Rooms can enjoy soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee, and tea anytime.

Facilities

The hotel has a 24-hour gym and a rooftop pool with skyline views. Too bad we were not able to try out the gym and pool. That merits a second visit, right?

The hotel offers business travelers a range of business-related services professionally supported by secretarial assistance, including fax, Internet, and printing services.

Overall, I truly loved the rooms in this hotel; they are well-appointed, with the most comfortable bed and pillows. I also appreciated the exclusive Club room perks and, best of all, I liked the hotel’s central location. It provides easy access to an array of tourist attractions and easy-to-find delish food.
