(Manila, Philippines) – Class and work suspensions on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, are announced at certain affected areas by Local Government Units (LGUs) due to inclement weather conditions brought by southwest monsoon or “Habagat” intensified by Tropical Depression Josie or “Bagyong Josie”.

TROPICAL DEPRESSION “JOSIE” IS NOW OUTSIDE THE PHILIPPINE AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY (PAR).

  • The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) will continue to bring scattered to widespread monsoon rains over Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro, Palawan, and Western Visayas. While, occasional rains over Metro Manila, and the rest of Luzon and of Visayas. Residents of these areas, especially those living near river channels, in low-lying areas and in mountainous areas, are still advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslide, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices and continue monitoring for updates.
  • Meanwhile, at 7:00 AM today, a Low-Pressure Area (LPA) was estimated based on all available data at 1,495 km East of Central Luzon (OUTSIDE PAR) (14.4°N, 135.5°E). This system may develop into a Tropical Depression in the next 24 to 48 hours.
Location of eye/center:At 7:00 AM today, the center of Tropical Depression “JOSIE” was estimated based on all available data at 585 km North Northeast of Basco, Batanes (OUTSIDE PAR) (25.5 °N, 123.5 °E)
Strength:Maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 65 kph
Forecast Movement:moving North at 20
Forecast Positions:24 Hour (Tomorrow morning): 950 km North of Basco, Batanes (OUTSIDE PAR)(29.0°N, 122.1°E)

No Classes / Class Suspensions for July 25, 2018

Department of Education (DepEd) class suspension guideline:

  • DepEd Calls on parents to determine whether their children should go to school during typhoons, floods and other calamities in the absence of official announcements from DepEd.
  • In the absence of storm signal warnings, LGU are expected to announce whole day class cancellations not later than 4:30AM or half day class suspensions not later than 11:00AM.
  • Storm signal warning declared by PAGASA between 10:00pm and 4:30AM reflect the whole day cancellation of classes in appropriate levels in the affected areas.
  • Storm signal warnings declared by PAGASA by 11:00AM automatically suspend the same day’s afternoon classes in appropriate levels in the affected areas.

*Suspension of classes for the tertiary level (colleges and universities) will be at the discretion of school management.
