Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House is an architectural wonder that used to be the personal residence of Sara Winchester, widow of William Winchester of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

The house has more than 2,000 doors that either lead to nowhere, to a 15-foot drop into an outdoor garden, or eight feet below in a kitchen sink. Some staircases lead to another floor, right into the ceiling, or to a cabinet door that opens to dozens more rooms. Winchester was obsessed with the number 13: 13 bathrooms, 13 overflow drain holes in the sink, 13 hooks in the seance room, and 13 parts to her will which she signed 13 times. This labyrinth was continuously built for 38 years until the 1906 earthquake, which trapped Winchester in one of the house’s rooms for hours.

Tourists and visitors can now go on guided tours around the house to learn about the history of its architecture and former owners.
