Taluksangay Mosque in Zamboanga City
The Mosque in the floating village of Taluksangay has been a popular tourist destination in Zamboanga City for decades. The red-domed Taluksangay Mosque stands out from the lush trees, greenery, and flowing river outside. Even at the height of the MNLF, Moro National Liberation Front, military conflict in 1973, tourists continued to visit the mosque.

It was the first mosque in the Zamboanga Peninsula, constructed in 1885 by Sama Banguingui Chieftain Hadji Abdullah Maas Nuno. Since then, it has become the center of propagation of Islam. The Masjid Taluksangay is one of the oldest and biggest mosques in the Western Mindanao region.
The mosque was recognized by Islamic countries like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Borneo and has become home to Muslim scholars worldwide.

Tawheed Islamic Monotheism was taught, resulting in the rapid spread of Islamic religion in the Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, and the Sulu Archipelago. Because it is the center of propagation of Islam in the Western Mindanao region, a representative of the Sultan of Turkey visited and sent gifts to the mosque. Most of the residents of Barangay Taluksangay are from the Sama Banguingui people and the Badjao communities settling on the coastal and riverside area.

To accommodate the increasing population of the barangay and Islamic followers that visit the mosque, prominent Muslim community members made donations for the expansion, renovation, and maintenance of the Taluksangay Mosque. The barangay officials initiated a renovation and expansion program that lasted for more than a year. Some of the fixtures inside the mosque were gifted by some of the wealthy residents of Barangay Taluksangay.
