Located west of the famous Santorini, Milos is one of Greece’s most popular travel destinations. This volcanic island is historically known for being the center of Christianity and currently for its big natural bay and plenty of geology. Milos has some of the most stunning landscapes thanks to its geology and beautiful beaches in terms of natural beauty.
The island’s capital is Plaka, which can be explored on foot, and the ancient city of Phylakopi on the island’s northern coast. Phylakopi used to be the biggest seaport during the Aegean era.

Stroll around Plaka
With its unique location atop a hill more than 200 meters above sea level, Plaka is as scenic as it gets. One of the best things to do in Milos is walking around its capital and taking pictures of the beautiful landscape.
Synonymous with most cities in Greece, Plaka also has small cobblestone streets crisscrossing traditional houses and numerous churches.
Make sure you check out the 13th century Venetian Castle before leaving Plaka.
Take photos of Kleftiko
Located in the island’s southwestern region, Kleftiko is one of Greece’s most photographed natural sites.
The site can only be accessed on water, but the hassle is worth it.
Kleftiko is basically an area with undulating white cliffs and bluffs. There are numerous caves at the bottom of the caves, one of which has a cave through which visitors can walk and admire its layered rock ceiling.
Go beach bumming
Exploring the beaches on Milos Island is one of the best things to do in Greece. The island may seem small, but it has whopping 75 beaches that can be reached either by water or land.
With that in mind, you don’t have to visit all the beaches on the island, just the ones that appeal to you, such as Sarakiniko Beach on the north coast, Firiplaka Beach, and Tsigrado Beach.
Explore shipwrecks in Sea Triangle
The sea triangle consists of Polyegos, Kimolos, and Minos, just off Milos’ shore.
Here you will find tens of shipwrecks and some of the most diverse floras and faunas you will ever see.
Visitors can also snorkel or dive in the waters here.
Visit the ruins at Phylakopi.
The ancient city of Phylakopi is located on the island’s northern coast and used to be an important port during the Cycladic civilization and one of the largest Aegean cities in Medieval Greek.
Thanks to its compactness, you can explore the city on foot easily.
Throughout its lifetime, the city has been demolished and reconstructed three times.
Check out the village of Firopotamos.
Though it is pretty small, this seaside settlement is a must-visit for anyone in Milos. It features a small group of fishing houses and an orthodox church called Saint Nikolaos.
You will find a ladder behind the church though it is unknown what it was used for.
Admire the ethereal beauty of Sarakiniko
Sarakiniko is located on the northern coast of the island. Due to its location, the wind and the sea have transformed silver-white volcanic rocks in Sarakiniko into winding mounds and columns.
What is more fascinating about Sarakiniko is the absence of vegetation, which renders the whole place resembles the moon’s surface.
When you get tired of exploring this otherworldly beauty, you can head down to the shallow cove with a beach for more scenic views.
Learning about mining heritage at the Mining Museum
Mining has been one of the island’s strongest economic activities since the Neolithic Period and produces the largest obsidian in the Mediterranean region.
The island also produced more Sulphur than any other place in the prehistoric world and provided a decent amount of alum deposits.
Explore the catacombs of Milos
Though not as famous as the catacombs in Rome or even close to home in Jerusalem’s Mount Olives, these underground crypts networks are must-see. They dated as back as the 1st century AD and were used by early Christians as a burial site.
The catacombs remained abandoned for many centuries until 1840, when they were excavated by Ludwig Ross from Germany.
Explore every inch of Plaka Castle
Walk towards the east edge of the town, and you will find a narrow staircase leading up the hill. The 13th century Venetian Castle is atop the slope that should be explored separately.
Though most of the castle is gone, the views from the top are second to none. On your way up, you will come across two whitewashed basilicas, namely Panagia Thalassitra and Panagia Skiniotissa.
Check out Adamantas WWII bomb shelter.
In WWII, Milos was a base for the Wehrmacht during their attack on Crete’s island.
As a result, several bomb shelters in Adamantas were used to store ammunition and offer armies.
Visit the small village of Klima.
The ancient town was the first port on the island. The settlement was built by the Dorians after the collapse of Fylakopi.
Today, visitors can explore the two acropolises – Pyrgaki and Prophitis Illias- an ancient temple from the Roman and Hellenistic eras.
Tour the fishing village of Mantrakia
Located just five kilometers northwest of Plaka, Mantrakia is one of the most scenic villages on the island and features summer houses in addition to fishing cabins with boats.
Visit Pollonia
The seaport of Pollonia is the second largest harbor after the port of Adamantas. It lies around 14 kilometers off the capital Plaka and has about 300 residents. This town is ideal for swimming and enjoying some great nightlife.
Enjoy delicious island food
Being an island, Milos’s cuisine is strongly influenced by seafood. There are plenty of dining options on the island, including Hamos, Ergina, and Gialos.
