Barcelona Hotels: Hotel del Mar Review

For years, I’d heard fantastic things about Barcelona—how it captivates visitors with its rich gastronomy and striking architecture. Still, nothing prepared me for the city itself. From the golden light on its boulevards to the aroma of sizzling tapas spilling out of busy bars, Barcelona turned out to be far more vibrant and enchanting than I’d imagined. It’s a place that reveals itself in layers, surprising you at every turn. In this story, I’ll share one of the highlights of my visit: my stay at Barcelona’s remarkable Hotel del Mar, a welcoming retreat just steps from the sea.

From a distance, I spotted our driver, arm raised, waving a small whiteboard with our names in bold. In that moment, it finally hit me: I was in Barcelona. The train ride from Madrid had taken about four hours via Eurail, but the changing scenery outside my window—golden fields, quiet towns, and rugged hills fading into the horizon—kept the journey from feeling monotonous.

Thanks to my pocket Wi-Fi, I was able to catch up on work, browse online, and stay connected, keeping me occupied and making the long ride feel both productive and pleasantly unhurried as we drew closer to the city.

I can’t help but get all giddy upon setting foot in Barcelona. As soon as I arrive, my mind overflows with possibilities: sun-drenched plazas and bustling markets to explore by day, lively tapas bars and neon-lit streets to discover by night, intimate wine bars serving the finest Catalan vintages, and hidden viewpoints promising that perfect Instagram-worthy shot.

Our visit to Barcelona was part of a 12-day familiarization trip across Spain, generously sponsored by the Spain Tourism Board and Turkish Airlines. It was the perfect opportunity to experience the city the way seasoned travelers do—unhurried, curious, and eager to be surprised.

From the busy platforms of Barcelona Sants train station, we made our way through the city streets to Hotel del Mar, our official home in Barcelona, nestled within walking distance of the sea and some of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

Hotel Location

Hotel del Mar (hotel info) is conveniently located in the heart of Barcelona, a 5-minute walk from the touristy El Born district and Ciutadella Park, where shopping and other restaurants can be found, and is probably one of the locals’ favorite areas in Barcelona.

What makes this hotel more convenient for travelers is its accessibility to nearby buses, trains, and metro lines, allowing you to travel around the city easily. But of course, Barcelona is a perfect city to do a walking tour, and that’s what we did most of the time.

How to get to Hotel del Mar Barcelona

Since UBER services are suspended in the city, there are other options on how you can reach Hotel de Mar, like the following:

• By car or taxi: the airport is 14 km from the center, and the journey takes about 13 minutes.
• By train: From the airport, take the train to Passeig de Gràcia station, then take another train to Estació de França (on the same platform). The hotel is located 100 meters away.

Public transport nearby

For those who want to skip riding the taxi and want to experience commuting around the city, check out some public transport below:

• Metro: Barceloneta is 230 m away (a 3-minute walk)
• Train: Francia Station is 350 m away (a 4-minute walk)
• Tourist bus: there is a stop in the same square as the hotel. You will also find several bus stops nearby.

Arrival Experience

Although Hotel del Mar is a 3-star property, its façade, services, amenities, and facilities feel far more upscale. The main entrance is framed by imposing Roman-style pillars and topped with an ornate wrought-iron balcony that immediately draws the eye. The exterior showcases a thoughtfully executed maritime theme, with deep blue accents, nautical memorabilia, and detailed harbor-front maps that evoke the charm and romance of life by the sea.

The building is clearly old yet exudes a quiet, timeless elegance. The lobby is small, with much of its original layout and vintage character preserved. When we arrived, an English-speaking attendant greeted us warmly and assisted with check-in, making the entire process smooth and effortless. They then helped carry our luggage up to our rooms.

Rooms

Hotel del Mar is a welcoming 3-star property featuring 72 comfortable, light-filled rooms with elegant, cozy décor. Selected rooms offer a private terrace, where guests can unwind while taking in sweeping views of Barcelona’s astonishing cityscape.

I stayed in room 409 on the highest floor, where a private terrace offers a sweeping view of nearby parks and historic buildings. The experience became even more memorable because I shared it with Monette, a close friend who flew in from Switzerland to visit. Our room was impressively spacious, furnished with two comfortable beds and still roomy enough to accommodate two additional guests.

All rooms are thoughtfully appointed and feature individually controlled heating and air conditioning, a flat-screen satellite TV with a wide selection of local and international channels, an in-room safe (available for an additional charge), and a private bathroom with a hairdryer, complimentary toiletries, and other convenient amenities designed for your comfort.

Food

Another thing we appreciated about Hotel del Mar is the convenience of the vending machines on the breakfast floor, which are perfect for quick snacks or drinks outside regular dining hours. The generous spread buffet breakfast, served daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., offered an impressive variety of dishes. We enjoyed everything from beloved local favorites to comforting Western breakfast staples, all beautifully presented and frequently replenished. The restaurant’s interior mirrors the hotel’s signature blue-and-brown theme, enhanced by cozy seating and warm, ambient lighting. Together, these details create a homely, welcoming atmosphere that makes each meal feel relaxed and unhurried.

Resort Facilities

If you plan to stay longer in Barcelona but have few clothes with you, worry not, as this hotel offers laundry and ironing services. For those who travel for business, Hotel del Mar also offers fast, reliable WiFi you can count on.

Departure

Since we were only staying at the hotel for one night, the staff kindly allowed us to leave our luggage at the reception while we continued exploring the city. The hotel was warm and inviting, with tasteful decor and a prime location just steps from many of the main attractions. I would have loved to stay longer and enjoy more of its cozy atmosphere, but we were scheduled to visit Logroño the next day to continue our familiarization trip.

Final Verdict

There are three things I love about this hotel: its helpful, polite staff; its central and convenient location; and its beautiful terrace. I’ve always been drawn to hotel rooms with generous balconies and sweeping views, and this one certainly lives up to that expectation. From the terrace, you can unwind, take in the city around you, and enjoy a quiet moment above the streets. For anyone who likes to discover new places to eat, this hotel is a great choice.

Several restaurants and cafés are just a short walk away, which makes planning food trips especially easy and enjoyable. You can step out, try a different spot for every meal, and be back in your room within minutes. While it may not be the best fit for travelers seeking a truly cosmopolitan, high-energy Barcelona experience, it excels in comfort and practicality. The hotel provides a peaceful base close to the train station, with relaxed surroundings that offer a welcome contrast to the busier parts of the city.
