Surfing in Taghazout, Morocco

When most people think of surfing, hot spots like the Hawaiian Islands, Australian, and South African coastlines immediately come to mind. However, Taghazout, an unassuming village along Morocco’s southwestern coast, is growing in reputation as a world-class surfing destination. If you’re interested in catching big warm waves, visit the region between September to April, winter, and early spring. It is located approximately 130 miles south of Marrakesh. The rural locale, populated by members of the Berber tribe, provides a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. It’s not as populated as other surfing destinations because many people don’t know about the village or its impressively long point breaks.

Getting There

The good news is that United States citizens can visit Morocco without a tourist visa for up to 90 days, but you must have a current passport to gain entry to the country. Numerous airlines fly to Morocco, which is already a top North African tourist destination. However, you may need to conduct a more detailed airline ticket search and be willing to pay a bit more to fly directly to Agadir.

Agadir is the largest city near Taghazout with an international airport, and it’s located about 10 miles north of the village. You can save big money by flying to Casablanca or Marrakesh from major U.S. hubs like Washington, D.C., and New York. You’ll then have a four-hour bus ride to the surfing village. Montreal, Canada, also offers inexpensive flights to Morocco on a daily basis, which provides an option for travelers who live close to the United States and Canada’s borders.

Where to Stay

Taghazout doesn’t have the usual accommodations found in larger Moroccan cities. Surfers typically stay in surf camps, which are shared apartments and houses right along the beach. To arrange accommodations, which range in price depending on your budget and the number of people in your surfing party, contact a surfing tour company. Many are run by English-speaking staff and provide customer service to international visitors online. Taghazout is a bit out of the way, so you can expect accommodations to include three meals a day consisting of local Moroccan cuisine.
