One of the great things about living in the Philippines is that not only do we have over 7000 gorgeous islands to enjoy but surrounding all those islands are incredible reefs and another whole underwater world. The only problem with that, is how do you take pictures and snapshots of your friends when you aren’t on terra firma.
I’ve used quite a few underwater cameras and casings and while some of them have been pretty good, I haven’t found the perfect solution yet. That’s why I jumped at the chance to review the new underwater camera from Speedo.
Yes, Speedo. I know you know them for making swimwears and other aquatic clothing and gear, but now they’ve jumped into the underwater camera market with what turns out to be a pretty great underwater camera.
Speedo Underwater Cameras
The Speedo Aquashot Camera is made for professional athletes as well as those who just like to splash around in the water (like me). The Aquashot works like any other digital camera but has a rugged waterproof outer body that keeps the delicate inner workings dry and functioning well.
This isn’t some bulky monster that looks like it came from a preschool playroom, it’s a 9 megapixel camera with built in flash that works at depths of up to three meters. The 2.4 inch screen is big enough to give underwater photographers a clear view and is bigger than most waterproof cameras offer.
Speedo Aquashot 5 Megapixels Underwater Camera
With auto exposure, ISO controls, full functional zoom, and multiple scene settings this camera is the closest thing I’ve found to a normal digital camera and guess what…it takes video too. With sound…though most of what you hear is just gurgle gurgle unless you happen to be in a pod of dolphins.
The internal memory is a standard 32 megabyte but with an SD card you can upgrade that to 8 gigs easily enough. The camera comes in white, blue, or purple and floats but just in case, I recommend the wrist strap. Overall, I’d say this is a winner and I recommend you check it out.
I was supposed to post some of the photos I took using the camera but the SD card was corrupted and Im still trying to recover the files. The only downside to this camera is that my laptop isn’t waterproof so even though it comes with a USB, I couldn’t connect it underwater. Everything else seemed to work just fine.
