Marco Polo Plaza Cebu Hotel Review
Last week, I celebrated my birthday on Siargao Island with my favorite travel buddies. Instead of taking a connecting flight directly to Siargao, I decided to fly out the next day and stay overnight in Cebu to meet some friends and fellow travel bloggers.
Dimsum Buffet Area
To reward myself for my upcoming birthday, I decided to splurge and stay at the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu (hotel info) – one of the best business and leisure hotels in Cebu. I took an early morning flight, too early to check in at the hotel, so I spent two hours at the Starbucks IT park to work on some pending tasks for my clients.
I left Starbucks at around 12pm and headed straight to the hotel to meet Marco Polo Plaza Cebu’s (rates) e-marketing Manager, Yumny Mariot. I first met her during the Sooo Pinoy Food Tour in Cebu, but we never had the chance to chat and share our thoughts about current social media trends. We enjoyed having lunch at Cafe Marco.
Compared to my last visit at Cafe Marco, where we tried Cebu’s famous local recipes, I finally got the chance to experience their famous lunch buffet. First impression? I loved the restaurant’s cozy ambiance, very attentive staff and of course their huge selection of food choices at the buffet table.
Lechon Cebu at Marco Polo Plaza Cebu
For starters, I had a plate of fresh tropical fruits in season followed by a few rolls of soft bread. I was delightfully impressed by their wide selection of breads; their soft and light dinner rolls were the best-tasting rolls I have ever had.
Sushi All you can Eat in Cebu City
To be honest, I didn’t know where to start and what to eat, since their lunch buffet is really extensive and unimaginable. I was delighted to see a nice spread of Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Filipino dishes, though their Mediterranean selection was surprisingly lacking. They also have a fantastic Salad Bar and mouth watering Dessert section. You’ve got to try their Ice Cream, Crepes and famous Malicious Cookies, the second best tasting chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had (second only to Monster Cookies by Pinoy Cravings; shameless plug, haha).
For my first plate, I tried the Hainanese Chicken and their famous Lechon Cebu. Their version of Hainanese Chicken is good; it reminded me of Melaka, where I tasted the best Chicken Rice in Malaysia. The Lechon Cebu is to die for…the meat is so tender and tasty with that perfect crispy pork skin that everyone is looking for. I’m glad the Lechon plate was newly replenished when I arrived. Cafe Marco’s Lechon Cebu is definitely better than Zubuchon, without a doubt.
My Bed for one night
My second and last plate was full of Danishes, chocolate muffins, fresh fruits, half dozen of Malicious Cookies and of course the perfect pairing: a good cup of freshly brewed Arabica-bean coffee (I could tell from its aroma and level of acidity).
After having lunch, we proceeded to the reception area to check in. I stayed in room 1803, a newly refurbished continental room that includes Continental Club Lounge access – a benefit exclusive to selected guests and registered club residents.
I love rooms with a view, and since the hotel is situated 600 feet above sea level along the prestigious Nivel Hills district, I had a very nice birds eye view of the City. The room had a queen size bed complete with air conditioning, alarm clock, bathrobe, bathroom amenities, Cable / Satellite TV, Color TV, ensuite / private bathroom, hairdryer, hot shower, internet access, kettle, laundry service, mini bar, modem / data port connection, refrigerator, safe in room, tea and coffee making facilities, and a telephone.
Exclusive Continental Lounge
The room was spacious and the bed was so comfortable. Next time I will definitely consider staying longer. I also loved their huge modern bathroom, which had very nice hot and cold handheld shower heads.
Breads and Pastries
The hotel is in a very nice location, since it lets you avoid the hustle and bustle of the city. Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about transportation as the area is very accessible, even at night.
Chorizo and Danggit for Breakfast
I was able to enjoy the Continental Club Lounge, where I had my breakfast the next day. Located on the 23rd floor, the lounge has an al fresco veranda that provides a nice view of Cebu’s Nivel Hills. The Continental Club Lounge is open from 6:00am to 10:00pm daily. I absolutely loved the exclusivity of the lounge; they have a menu where you can choose and order any food you want for as long as you want to eat. The food is served in less than 15 minutes and there are various beverage options that are not usually available at the typical breakfast.
Here are some of the benefits of getting access to the Continental Club Lounge:
- Complimentary Breakfast
- Complimentary evening cocktail
- Complimentary tea, coffee, ad softdrinks throughout the day
- Complimentary use of meeting room for 2 hours per day, reservation is recommended
- Complimentary WI-FI available in the Continental Club Lounge
- Complimentary Broadband Internet Access in the room
- Complimentary Pressing of first suit or dress
- Complimentary laundering of the first shirt or blouse
- Library featuring a wide selection of books, newspapers and magazines
Before leaving the hotel, Yumny gave me a box of their famous ensaymada, which came in three flavors: plain cheese, ube, and mango flavor. Their Malicious Cookies and ensaymada are available at the Lobby Shop. Other products available include homemade jams, cakes, pastries, chocolate, truffle infused extra virgin oil and more!
All in all, I really enjoyed my overnight stay at the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu (book now). I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who appreciates good food, nice rooms with a view, business class amenities and quality service. I will most definitely be going back there again for a longer stay.
