History

The roots of the shrine date back to the early 20th century when the Carmelites established a presence in New Manila. In 1925, the first Carmelite community arrived in the area, bringing with them devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

A modest chapel was initially built to serve the growing Catholic population. Over time, as devotion increased, the structure was expanded into a full parish church. After World War II, further developments transformed the church into a prominent spiritual center.

In recognition of its religious, historical, and cultural importance, the Vatican designated the church a Minor Basilica in 2020. This honor affirmed its role as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the Philippines.
