Olango-Sulpa Island: Paddling In These Pristine Islands in Cebu And More

Sulpa Island of Olango, Cebu

In the Central Visayas region, you’ll find an exotic group of islands called Olango Island Group, a part of Cebu, which consists of six satellite islets namely Caubian, Camungi, Caohangan, Gilutongan, Nalusuan, Pangan-an and Sulpa. It’s hard not to take notice of this group of islands which is teeming with wildlife, rich marine biodiversity, and a beautiful seascape – almost everything you’d want for a truly tropical paradise.

Olango-Sulpa Island is a destination you shouldn’t miss when in Cebu!

We got the chance to explore one of these islands, Sulpa Island, during the Outdoor Adventure Trails and Farm Fork Fitness Circuit by the Department of Tourism VII. Like what we did, set a day to tour and try out various water and island activities here.

Must-Try Activities on Sulpa Island

1. Paddle your way to the island

I tried SUP (Standing Up Paddling) for a short time, and I enjoyed it!

Feeling adventurous? Try paddling your way to Olango island seated, on your knees, or even standing up! Cebu, being the paddling capital of the Philippines, takes pride in especially Sulpa Island for having tranquil waters ideal for paddling.

2. Kayak in its blue waters

It was a beautiful day to kayak

One of the charms you’ll love for Sulpa Island is that locals say that it is “sleeping” during the daytime. The waters are calm and soothing, perfect for relaxation and of course, water activities like kayaking.

3. Have a seafood picnic with your friends and family

Seafood feast!

A beach trip to Sulpa Island won’t be complete without a delectable spread of fresh seafood dishes, barbeque, and local delicacies. During our visit, we were accommodated by a local women association who cooked and prepared food for us. We had grilled fish, squid, pork, prawns, crabs, ginamos, and fresh fruits!

4. Camp by the beach

Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary rates: Camp for as low as P100!

If a day tour isn’t enough for you in Olango-Sulpa Island, you can camp and lounge all night by the beach. But to set your expectations, this group of islands are inhabited and that means there are only open cottages available plus there’s no electricity. Everything is raw and pristine and that’s the very beauty of camping here. Make sure to bring your essentials and food for the night!

5. Bike around to explore the island

Have you tried biking on an island?

What better way to discover the island’s treasures than to go biking! Leisurely pedal through the community, say hi to some locals, and find some restaurants and camps like the Taytayan Camp.

6. Be amazed by the Olango reefs

For diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, the Olango Group of Island is a heavenly place to take a closer look of the captivating coastal ecosystem underwater. You’ll meet various marine species, seagrass beds, sandflats, and the mangroves which are most extensive in this part of Cebu.

7. Watch the birds during the migratory season

A local bird specialist checked out some birds and showed us after

We are very fortunate to have chanced upon some endemic and foreign birds in their migratory season here at Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary. We were guided by the local bird specialists who told us about the birds we saw using their long lenses. This was such a fantastic experience!

Sulpa Island Day Tour Sample Itinerary

From Costabella Beach Hotel, we joined an arranged tour and hopped to a boat en route to Sulpa Island. Travel time was more or less than 30 minutes. Here’s a sample itinerary:

  • 7:00 am Prepare for the tour, have breakfast
  • 8:30 am Depart for Sulpa Island
  • 9:00 am Arrival at Sulpa Island, start kayaking and paddling
  • 11:00 am Early picnic-style lunch
  • 12:00 nn Paddle to Olango Island or take a motorboat
  • 12:15 pm Community interaction: Bird-watching, exploring the island, biking, free time
  • 4:00 pm Back to San Vicente wharf to return to hotel (or camp the night away if you want)

Olango-Sulpa Island is a tiny island only, but it’s not short of the things you can try and do. It’s like having your own private island for a day, and it’s definitely something to add to your bucket list!
