Traveling has become a big part of the lives of Filipinos. People who used to just go out of town during summer vacation to go home to their provinces or attend a fiesta are now traveling and fulfilling their wanderlusts any time of the year. The tourism industry has definitely seen a boost these past few years but with that comes the disadvantages. The sad thing is that not many are aware of the consequences when they throw their garbage wherever they want or they don’t want to get involved but the environment is suffering from this. Tourists and locals must all work together to promote eco-tourism.
Because of this, Cebu Pacific which is the leading local carrier here in the Philippines has begun its Juan Effect Campaign which aims to promote sustainable tourism and to spread awareness to everyone what the responsibilities are when traveling. Cebu Pacific has partnered with the Department of Tourism (DOT) with the blessing of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to encourage the practice of responsible tourism in the country.
Take your Eco-bags When Traveling
Using a single-use plastic bag is a no-no. Bringing home a souvenir or more is bound to happen when traveling but plastic bags are very dangerous to marine animals like sea horses, fishes, and sea turtles. It’s also dangerous to land animal like dogs and cats when ingested. Using your own eco-bag can prevent plastic bags from damaging the environment further.
Don’t Use Plastic Bottles
One of the most common pollutants is plastic bottle because a lot of tourists get thirsty when traveling especially during the summer and these kinds of bottles almost doesn’t decompose or even if it does, it will take many, many years. Tons and tons of these plastic bottles have found its way to the ocean which caused many marine creatures their lives. The best thing to do is to use refillable bottles.
Practice Proper Waste Management
Familiarize yourself with garbage segregation so that biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable materials can be put together and disposed of properly. Aside from that, you should carry your garbage with you until you find a trash bin. Never leave it anywhere especially near the bodies of water.
This nationwide movement is joined by Celebrity Erwan Heussaff and travel blogger Kyle “Kula” Jennerman. They’re advocates of the movement which aims to lessen the impact of waste and plastics in the environment. They also join Cebu Pacific in promoting sustainable environmental practices in the country.
Discounts will be given by partner establishments like Klean Kanteen, SipPH, SudsPH, Robinsons Department Store and Daiso Japan to EveryJuan who joins the campaign.
