From Manila to Chongqing: China’s Mountain City Brings Its Food, Culture, and Travel Experiences to the Philippines
For Filipino travelers looking beyond the usual destinations in China, Chongqing is making a stronger case for a spot on the travel list. The sprawling mountain city recently brought a taste of its culture, cuisine, tourism experiences, and modern innovations to Manila, giving Filipinos a closer look at one of China’s most fascinating destinations.

Chongqing Meets Manila – A Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration” opened in Manila on September 12
The spotlight was on “Chongqing Meets Manila: A Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration,” which opened on September 12 at SM Mall of Asia. The two-day event brought together around 400 guests from the political, business, cultural, educational, and tourism sectors of the Philippines and China, as well as overseas Chinese communities and students.
For travelers, the event offered more than a cultural showcase. It highlighted the growing connections between Chongqing and the Philippines and introduced opportunities for Filipinos to experience the city’s food, heritage, education, technology, and tourism attractions.
Why Filipinos Should Know More About Chongqing
Chongqing has become one of China’s most recognizable urban destinations, famous for its dramatic cityscape, mountainous setting, spicy cuisine, historic neighborhoods, and modern infrastructure.
The city offers a different experience from China’s more familiar destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Its combination of mountains, rivers, food culture, nightlife, technology, and distinctive architecture has helped make Chongqing a popular destination for international travelers.
The Manila event provided Filipino visitors with a preview of what makes the city worth exploring.
A Taste of Chongqing Comes to Manila
Food played a major role in the celebration, with traditional Chinese dishes and Mid-Autumn Festival treats featured throughout the event.
Mooncakes were among the highlights, giving guests an opportunity to experience one of the season’s most recognizable Chinese traditions.
For Filipino travelers, food is often an important part of choosing a destination, and Chongqing has plenty to offer. The city is particularly famous for its spicy hotpot, noodles, grilled dishes, and distinctive Sichuan-influenced flavors.
The event allowed Manila audiences to experience a small part of that culinary culture without leaving the Philippines.
Seven Exhibitions Showcase Chongqing
The festival featured seven themed exhibitions covering different aspects of Chongqing.
Visitors explored displays focused on intangible cultural heritage, traditional Chinese food, education, tourism, and new energy vehicles. The “Study in Chongqing” presentation also introduced educational opportunities for students interested in pursuing studies in the city.
Cultural performances added another layer to the experience, receiving warm applause from the audience.
The combination of food, heritage, education, and modern technology offered visitors a broader view of Chongqing beyond its famous skyline.
Chongqing Wants More Filipino Visitors
Tourism was one of the central themes of the event.
Wu Changfan, Deputy Director-General of the Publicity Department of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee, said the celebration transformed an earlier online exchange into an in-person gathering.
He also expressed Chongqing’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Manila in tourism promotion and people-to-people exchanges, aiming to welcome more Filipino visitors to the city.
The initiative comes as tourism ties between China and the Philippines continue to develop.
Maria Christina G. Aquino, Assistant Secretary of the Philippine Department of Tourism, said China was the Philippines’ fourth-largest source market for tourists, with nearly 320,000 Chinese arrivals recorded as of September 9.
From Chongqing Cuisine to Chinese Technology
The event also demonstrated that Chongqing’s growing relationship with the Philippines extends beyond tourism.
During the “China, An Opportunity: Chongqing Brands” promotional conference, Zhang Li of the CPC Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Committee highlighted industries such as new energy vehicles and HIFU technology.
Several Chongqing-based organizations and companies also presented opportunities for Philippine audiences.
Happyyou International Travel signed a cooperation agreement with Philippine tourism organizations, while Southwest University, Changan Automobile, and Air China introduced opportunities connected to education, automotive technology, and air travel.
These initiatives could strengthen tourism and business ties between Chongqing and the Philippines.
The “Flying Across Mountains and Seas” Connection
The Manila celebration also continued the “Flying Across Mountains and Seas” twin-city campaign, which was launched online in May.
The initiative aims to strengthen connections between Chongqing and the Philippines in tourism, culture, education, trade, and other areas.
The latest gathering provided an opportunity to move those conversations offline, allowing representatives, tourism stakeholders, businesses, students, and cultural communities to meet in person.
What Filipino Travelers Can Expect From Chongqing
For Filipinos planning a future trip to China, Chongqing offers a destination with a distinctive personality.
Travelers can explore the city’s famous mountain-and-river landscapes, sample Chongqing hotpot and local noodles, discover traditional neighborhoods, experience its spectacular nighttime views, and visit cultural and historical attractions.
The city is also an interesting choice for travelers who enjoy photography. Its elevated roads, dense skyline, bridges, rivers, cable cars, and mountainous terrain create some of China’s most recognizable urban scenes.
The growing tourism exchange between Chongqing and the Philippines could also make the destination increasingly familiar to Filipino travelers.
A New Destination to Watch
The “Chongqing Meets Manila” celebration offered Filipino audiences a closer look at a Chinese destination that deserves more attention.
From its food and cultural traditions to its modern industries and tourism attractions, Chongqing presented itself as a destination with plenty to discover.
For Filipino travelers looking for something different on their next trip to China, Chongqing could be one of the destinations to watch as travel and tourism connections between the Philippines and China continue to expand.
