Cebu City goes cashless for mass transit system

Cebu welcomes BRT Card

“This is the future of Cebu. Tomorrow will be better than today” says Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña.

It is so obvious nowadays that people are preferring cashless transaction. The reason behind this is that it’s an easier spending option when traveling and shopping.

A perfect example of this cashless transaction is the GCASH and Paymaya app. Through these very convenient apps, users can now skip the long queue on payment centers. It is also convenient for moviegoers who won’t be wasting any more time to buy some tickets.

In an article by When In Manila, Cebu City is said to implement a fully integrated cashless payment system for its mass transit system and more. The Cebu City Mayor is currently in talks with Korean Smart Card Co., LTD, an internationally recognized leading e-payment service provider based in South Korea.

I am proud to announce that Cebu’s BRT will be the first mass transit system in the country to incorporate a fully integrated cashless payment system! Not only will you be able to use your BRT Card to pay for your fare, eventually you will be able to use it in convenience stores, supermarkets, taxis, gas stations, and even movies and restaurants.

Introducing the BRT Card

“The BRT Card will be faster to use than a credit card and more secure since no personal information other than your name is linked to your account. Theft is deterred since the card will also function as a photo ID and if lost. (It) can be deactivated remotely through a website. For parents, you will be able to get a special card that tracks your children’s expenses and travel as well as gives you the ability to top up their cards remotely” he added.

In addition with his post, he also included some photos on how will this innovative cashless for mass transit works. As you can see in the photos above, Mayor Osmena takes a photo in front of the machine. Later on, a printed out card with his choice of character and QR card came out of the machine.

He commented that the tentative name for the card would “BRT Card” and will have its own dedicated lanes so it can have a schedule tolerance of +/- 1 min.
