Day 3: Tour of Maizuru in Kyoto

From Fukuoka, we finally arrived at the port of Maizuru in Kyoto. I finally had enough time to sleep inside my cabin; however, I decided not to join the City tour due to unbearable pain from a gout attack. I just learned that I have this type of arthritis two days before I left for Japan. I made a mistake of eating beans, mushroom soup, and lots of raw fish the other night, which may have increased my uric acid and triggered my gout.

I had already experienced the discomfort of the pain the night before our arrival in Maizuru. To save both time and effort and to avoid the hassle of going to the breakfast area, I decided to use their breakfast delivery service. This convenient service allows passengers to order a variety of breakfast items, including fresh bread, cereals, a selection of juices, warm porridge, creamy yogurt, as well as coffee and tea. Although the choices may be somewhat limited compared to the extensive buffet offered at the breakfast venue, this option proved to be very helpful, especially for passengers feeling unwell or those preferring a lighter meal.
After deciding not to participate in the tour, I reached out to Ms. Regina, the Media Relations officer at Costa Cruises. She kindly suggested that I use the time to rest and get ready for the activities scheduled for the following day.
Since I spent almost the entire day inside my cabin, I had ample time to truly appreciate its features and ambiance. Picture a spacious, hotel-style room with warm, inviting decor, complemented by a large veranda that stretches along the exterior. From this veranda, I could enjoy breathtaking, unobstructed views of the shimmering ocean, with waves gently crashing against the shore and seagulls soaring overhead, creating a serene and picturesque scene.
My cozy cabin features a sturdy wooden work desk nestled by a window that offers a tranquil view of the surrounding woods. Since I had nothing scheduled for the entire day, I seized the opportunity to reflect and write stories recounting my previous journeys, capturing vivid memories and sensory details.
Although I can regulate the temperature inside the room, there are moments when it becomes unbearably cold. Fortunately, I have a lovely private veranda where I can unwind, enjoy fresh fruits, and take a relaxing cigarette break.
The cabin featured a well-stocked minibar, offering a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to suit different preferences. Adjacent to the minibar, there was a convenient coffee and tea station, equipped with everything needed to prepare hot drinks, ensuring comfort and accessibility.
The bathroom, while relatively small, was typical of those found on cruise ships—compact yet efficiently designed. Having visited multiple cruise ships, I’ve noticed that cabins generally lack spacious bathrooms, so this size was consistent with standard onboard accommodations.
My cozy cabin was attended daily by a dedicated steward whose attentive care ensured that my room was spotless and perfectly maintained each morning. He also provided me with a neatly printed, comprehensive list of daily activities, including upcoming tours, dinner schedules, various recreational pursuits, and other engaging options to enhance my stay.
I also appreciated the convenience of ordering delicious food at any time of day for an additional fee. Each cozy cabin is thoughtfully equipped with a telephone, so you can easily contact the restaurant for your favorite meals, reach the front office for any assistance, or communicate with your dedicated cabin steward to attend to your needs promptly.
