LocTote Flak Sack Anti-Theft Backpack Review

The transition from student to travel writer isn’t a cheap one. A school bag can only survive for so long in unexpected rainfall mid-hike or a day immersed in sand beachside. I tested the LocTote Industrial Bag Flak Sack on two recent trips, volunteering at a medical mission in Iloilo and exploring the island of Sumilon on the Cebu Strait. Two different experiences with the same result, enhanced security and peace of mind.

I received the LocTote via mail in a slender parcel containing the Flak Sack inside a white sleeve, a pamphlet of instructions and additional rope straps. I initially thought to myself, “Wow this bag is heavy”.

Trying it on at first and seeing it completely cover my back and end lower than my waist (18”x14” and I’m 5’3”), I was quick to assume its discomfort when filled. The weight of the bag is not straining but noticeable at 1.25lbs.

During my trips, I found security in the weight of the bag and the grip of its robust straps that don’t dig into you. The straps’ adjustability is still a mystery to me; fortunately, its default setting fits fine and there’s a clip on the strap that I can click on to the other for the bag to hug me completely when I need that extra stability.

Travelling is less stressful with the bag in front of me as I check in at the airport. There are different options in securing the bag, enclose it and locking it onto other objects.

Understanding the bags mechanics is crucial in protecting your belongings. At the beginning, I found myself locking and leaving it on to a tent post while volunteering yet the bag was still open.

Reading other reviews, I understand the bag is not indestructible. Made with a steel reinforced locking strap, double braided nylon drawstring ropes and double layered UHMWPE fabric, with enough intention and consistent force, the Flak Sack can be punctured and straps cut.

After two trips, I can see some of the seams coming undone (logo pocket and inside where the straps feed through the bag) but nothing that implies a breach in its integrity. Note that I did throw it around many times on jagged limestone, mud, and sand.

With a lifestyle that involves flying, hiking and never being far from my belongings, these cons aren’t concerning to me. The LocTote’s qualities complement my travels by maintaining my mobility and securing my gear further.
