Palacio de Los Velada Hotel Review
I was in Avila last May 2015 to join other bloggers from different parts of the world in exploring Castilla y Leon—a lovely region in Spain with a rich history. As a full-time travel blogger and seasoned tourist, I had already experienced staying in different kinds of hotels—from the cramped to the luxurious, you name it, I stayed there! However, it was my first time staying at an actual old palace.
Palacio de Los Velada Hotel Review
In this impressive 16th-century palace, the Palacio de los Velada (hotel info) marries old world charm to modern day comfort. It has a beautiful arched gallery right next to the reception area, as well as glazed courtyards that are especially picturesque when bathed in sunlight, providing a perfect venue for social gatherings.

Rooms Facing the Cathedral
Palacio de Los Velada has retained some of the original architectural features of the palace, and has a lovely patio surrounded by a cloister and a glass roof. The ancient castle hotel is actually a major draw for tourists because of this architecture, so I do recommend the two-birds-with-one-stone approach by booking a room here and getting to enjoy its majesty every day of your stay.
Located in the heart of the walled city of Avila, Palacio de Los Velada is just a 5-minute walk away from Avila Cathedral, Museo Provincial, and Basilica de San Vicente. As for the beautiful Convento de Santa Teresa and Convento de San Jose, it will only take you a leisurely 10 minute walk to get there. There are also a few souvenir shops in front of the hotel.
Upon my arrival, I had some difficulty locating my room. The staff explained that this was because the old castle structure had many intersecting hallways. The first elevator only goes as far as the 2nd floor—upon reaching the second floor, I had to walk further to find another elevator going to the 3rd floor, where my room was located.
I stayed in a single room at the 3rd floor of this old palace—it was a bit small, but quite cozy for a single occupant and charmingly decorated in an antique style.
My Bedroom for a night in Avila
Apart from the beautiful in-room amenities, I was also lucky to have a room with an amazing view of the city. The bird’s eye view I got was definitely one of the best features of the room I received.
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property and its speed is unbelievably fast. Though the room was a little bit too small for my liking, the bathroom was quite big.
My room included free toiletries, a mini bar, TV, working desk, hairdryer, hot and cold shower, bathtub, safety deposit box and air conditioning—all the comforts of home to keep me cozy in glorious Spain.
Breakfast is really very good, with a huge choice of hot/cold/sweet/savoury things. The buffet breakfast has virtually every fruit juice I can think of, a wide tea selection, unlimited coffee, a wide selection of hams, and an impressive bread section. If you’re looking for lighter options, the fruit selection and the salad bar was also very good.
The in-hotel restaurant, El Tostado, features stunning chandeliers and serves some traditional regional cuisine in its fine dining interiors. The Palacio de los Velada (discounted rates) also has an English-style bar if you’re looking for a nightcap.
The first floor rooms located towards the front of the hotel are wonderful, but they can be noisy as they overlook the street—so avoid them if you’re a light sleeper. Ask to be higher up and away from the central atrium lounge, and if you can, request one with a good view of the city.
Wide Selection of Hams for Breakfast
Staying in the hotel was definitely one of my more positive travel experiences, and added to my enjoyment of my stay in Avila. The check in process was efficient and reception staff were always very pleasant and helpful. I lost my passport in Madrid and I needed to print some documents for my travel documents application and they printed all the documents I needed in no time at all.
Fruits included in Breakfast Buffet
Overall, the hotel was a charming place to stay—I would recommend it even solely on its historic value, so the fact that they have such comfortable accommodations and helpful staff should seal the deal if you’re looking for a place to stay. Do factor in the convenience of staying right next to the Cathedral, which is the main attraction in Avila, if you choose the Palacio de los Velada.
I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting Avila.
